Terry narcissus: varieties and cultivation
The unusual terry daffodil is a real fragrant miracle with an unusual petal shape and a terry crown in the middle. It looks beautiful in a bouquet and on a flower bed. When cut, the plant is turned upside down with a flower so that the juice does not flow out of the stem, then the bouquet stands in the vase longer.
Brief description and varieties of terry daffodil
The terry daffodil differs from other varieties in the shape of the flower. The crown in the middle is not bell-shaped, it looks more like a small whimsical rose or aster. The color of the perianth can be yellow, orange or white, and the crown in the middle is the same or contrasting color.
Popular varieties:
- “Texas” – the flower is fragrant and thermophilic, the color of the perianth is white, the crown is white-yellow;
- “Ice King” – large-flowered, white perianth, light yellow double center;
- “Akropolis” – cream or white flowers with a red-orange spot in the center;
- “Obdam” – pure white flowers with a delicate beige tint;
- Crackington is one of the earliest varieties, yellow flowers with a bright orange center;
- “Pink Champagne” – a pale pink terry center surrounded by a white rim;
- “Rosie Cloud” – perianth petals are pearl-beige, the middle with an orange tint.
The recognized leader is the English variety “Dorchester” with an exquisite shape of a white-pink flower.
In shading, only small-flowered, unpretentious varieties can be planted, terry daffodils prefer sunny places. Plants do not require special care, but for stable flowering they need to be fertilized.
For feeding daffodils, ash is used, nitrogen fertilizers in small quantities – in the form of rotted humus, the use of manure is not desirable. The plants are fed 3 times per season – during autumn planting, when shoots appear, and during the period of bud formation.
Daffodils are dug up in the summer, after the foliage has dried, once every four years. The bulbs are separated, treated with a fungicide, dried in the air for 3 weeks and stored until autumn planting, placing on the bottom of a cardboard box in a cool room
In the fall, daffodils begin to be planted when the soil temperature drops to + 10 ° C, no later than 3 weeks before frost, so that the plants have time to take root, but do not have time to start growing. Sand must be added to clay soil in order to improve its structure and humus. In order for daffodils to bloom, the bulbs must not be deeply buried. The depth should be about 2 or 3 times the diameter of the bulb. Before the onset of frost, the bed is covered with mulching material.
Having bought daffodils in the store, you need to choose a sunny flower bed for them. The bulbs are planted in autumn and fertilized 3 times a year.
