Tequila Jose Cuervo: a brief history and overview of the species

Tequila Jose Cuervo is characterized by low-key stability, it is considered one of the most acceptable opening options for beginners. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that from time to time the producers of the drink are characterized by rather bold and unexpected experiments. For example, for some time they produced Cuervo Black mixed tequila, which, instead of the usual cane alcohol, included a distillate obtained from sugar beets.

The European-oriented export version of mixed and 38% tequila from José Cuervo contains XNUMX degrees of alcohol. In addition, the brand produces Especial Cinge cinnamon liqueur and a variety of ready-made cocktail variations on the Margarita theme.

A Brief History of Tequila by Jose Cuervo

The José Cuervo brand produces the oldest commercial agave in Mexico, made from specially cultivated plants.

Its history dates back to the time of Spanish rule, when in 1758 a certain José Antonio de Cuervo y Valdes acquired a royal land license, thanks to which he was able to become the owner of the Cofradia de las Animas hacienda.

Probably, in view of the insufficient fertility of the local soil, the newly minted landowner decided to cultivate the wild agave with the subsequent production of mezcal from it.

The semi-legal trading of his own agave, later known as Casa de Сuervo, allowed the son of the founder of the family business, Jose Maria Guadalupe de Cuervo, to conduct business on a legal basis.

In 1795, he managed to obtain from King Carlos IV the first patent in history, officially allowing not only the production of agave alcohol, but also giving the right to its wide commercial implementation.

Towards the end of the XNUMXth century, the descendants of José Maria, due to difficult financial circumstances, were forced to sell the family business to their more fortunate countryman, Vincento Jesus Flores.

However, already in 1900, the family distillery returned to the family again as a result of the marriage of the widow of Flores, Anna Gonzalez Rubio and José Cuervo Labastida, who served as the manager of her late husband.

It was during this period that the company’s products, made exclusively from blue agave, received its current name: Tequila José Cuervo. Under this name, the drink became known in many countries of the world.

There is a legend that it was on its basis that the famous Margarita was first prepared.

Today, the company is owned by distant relatives of Cuervo and Flores. These worthy people even managed to resist the onslaught of the ubiquitous alcohol monster Diageo, who sought to acquire a controlling stake in the company for more than $ 3 billion.
