Templates in Excel

Instead of creating an Excel workbook from scratch, you can create one from a template. There are many free templates in the public domain just waiting to be used.

Existing Templates

To create a book based on an existing template, follow the instructions below:

  1. On the Advanced tab File (File) click Create (New).
  2. To select a template from the available samples (they are already installed on your computer), click on Template examples (Sample templates).
  3. To select a template from Office.com, select a category. For example, click the button Calendars (Calendars).
  4. To download a template, select it and click on the button Download (Download).

Excel will create a workbook based on this template. The program will also save the template in the folder Patterns (Templates). You can access this folder by clicking on My templates (My templates).

Creating a template

If you create your own template, always keep it in the folder Patterns (Templates). This way you can create new workbooks based on this template without worrying that the original file will be overwritten.

To create a template, do the following:

  1. Create a workbook.
  2. On the Advanced tab File (File) click Save as (Save As).
  3. Enter a file name.
  4. Выберите Template Excel (Excel Template) from drop down list File Type (Save as type).

Excel automatically activates the folder Patterns (Templates). Pay attention to its location on your computer. It is usually located here:

    C:Пользователи<имя пользователя>AppDataRoamingMicrosoftШаблоны

  5. Нажмите кнопку Save (Save).

To create a book based on this template, follow these steps:

  1. On the Advanced tab File (File) click Create (New).
  2. Click on My templates (My Templates).
  3. Choose your template.
  4. Press OK.

Excel will create a workbook based on this template.

Note: To edit a template, click the button Open (Open) tab File (File). Edit the file and save it in the original location.
