Most of us associate fever with colds. But this is not the only reason. The situation becomes especially difficult when there are no additional symptoms with a fever. In this case, it is more difficult to understand the reasons.
What temperature should be normal
In adults, normal temperature is not a static indicator. It fluctuates during the day within the limits of 1 ° C – from 36,4 to 37,4 ° C, reaching a maximum by about 17 – 20 hours and dropping to minimum values by 4 – 6 in the morning. Also, the temperature rises during physical exertion, sports, excitement, emotional stress. But this increase is small and quickly returns to normal.
Causes of fever 38
An increase in temperature to 38 ° C can be an indicator of the presence of many natural and pathological processes in the body. In the absence of any other symptoms and satisfactory health, the temperature may decrease on its own.
It must be understood that an increase in temperature is a reflection of the processes occurring in the body and serve as a protective reaction of the immune system in response to external stimuli.
In the absence of any symptoms, an increase in temperature may be due to external factors. An increase in temperature to 38 ° C and above may be due to:
- overheating in the sun;
- alcohol intake;
- intense physical exercise;
- stress;
- taking certain medicines.
The temperature during overheating of the body is associated with prolonged exposure to the sun in a stuffy, unventilated room. In this case, a violation of the thermal balance occurs, since under such conditions natural heat transfer is difficult.
In women, an increase in temperature can sometimes be associated with menstruation and the period of ovulation. In the absence of any other signs of disease, the temperature will drop by itself and nothing needs to be done.
However, in some cases, a rise in temperature to 38 ° C in the absence of other symptoms may be associated with infection, poisoning, or an inflammatory process. In this case, other signs of the disease have not yet had time to make themselves felt, such as during the incubation period of infectious diseases.
An increase in temperature to 38 ° C without symptoms may be due to more serious reasons, such as:
- autoimmune diseases;
- avitaminosis;
- violation of thermoregulation;
- contact with an irritant.
An increase in body temperature is associated with contact with an irritant or foreign agent that the immune system is trying to cope with. An increase in temperature without symptoms can signal the development of more severe diseases in adults, and be the main symptom. These diseases include:
- tuberculosis;
- anemia;
- malaria;
- typhoid fever;
- malignant neoplasms;
- HIV;
- hepatitis;
- pyelonephritis, etc.
If you do not take any measures in these cases, the temperature can be kept for a long time.
An increase in temperature during anemia is often found in pregnant women, especially if the expectant mother smokes, is engaged in heavy physical labor, the pregnancy is multiple, the mother is often given birth.
How to bring down the temperature of 38 for a child
What to do if the temperature is 38 ° C in a child, and there are no other symptoms? Doctors do not recommend taking antipyretics from the first day if the child tolerates the temperature relatively well, as this can reduce the body’s natural defenses and increase the duration of the disease.
To alleviate the condition of the child, bed rest is recommended, abundant fluid intake in the form of:
- green tea;
- walrus;
- compote;
- milk with honey;
- mineral water without gas.
If the child has any concomitant chronic diseases, or if the child is difficult to tolerate fever, then it is recommended to bring it down. You can reduce the temperature of a child with the help of children’s Paracetamol, which is available in tablets, syrup and rectal suppositories.
The dose of Paracetamol must be calculated based on the weight of the child. It should be 10 mg per 1 kg of body weight. When taking a suspension and syrup, it must be borne in mind that 5 ml of the drug contains 120 mg of the active substance. Before using Paracetamol, be sure to read the instructions for the drug.
If the child’s condition allows, then you can refrain from taking antipyretic drugs for 1 – 1,5 days. If the temperature persists longer than this period, it is recommended to consult a doctor. If there are also other symptoms, for example, sore throat, cough at a temperature of 38 ° C, it is necessary to call a doctor who will establish the correct diagnosis and prescribe treatment.
How to bring down the temperature of 38 adults
To decide whether it is necessary to bring down the temperature in an adult, it is necessary to focus on the general condition of the patient.
In the absence of any other symptoms and if the temperature of 38 ° C is limited to a slight malaise, you can try to deal with the temperature yourself. In this case, you can resort to the following measures:
- take plenty of fluids;
- ventilate the room;
- dress lighter;
- observe bed rest.
If an adult patient has chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular or pulmonary, and others, the temperature of 38 ° C and above must be brought down.
The absence of severe symptoms other than fever may indicate that the disease develops gradually. This is especially true for chronic inflammatory or infectious processes.
To bring down the temperature in an adult patient, you can use Paracetamol, as well as other products containing it as an active substance. The following medications can also be used as antipyretics in adults:
- Aspirin;
- Ibuprofen;
- Nurofen;
- Diclofenac.
- Ibuklin.
What to do if the temperature persists?
Elevated body temperature contributes to the production of interferons, special substances that protect the body from viruses, bacteria, as well as from their metabolic products. Also, elevated body temperature prevents the reproduction of pathogens and contributes to their death.
Therefore, when answering the question of whether it is worth bringing down the temperature of 38 ° C, experts do not recommend immediately taking antipyretics.
If the temperature is 38 ° C and above for more than 2 – 3 days, you should seek medical help.
After passing all the necessary studies and tests, the doctor will be able to make an accurate diagnosis and prescribe the appropriate treatment.
What is dangerous temperature 38?
For relatively healthy adults, such a temperature in itself is not dangerous (but its causes are another matter). The exceptions are patients with cardiovascular and pulmonary pathology, neuropsychiatric disorders, disorders of the immune system, as well as the elderly. In this category of patients, you need to carefully monitor your well-being, and at the slightest deterioration in the condition, take antipyretics and call a doctor.
How long can a temperature of 38 stay?
Depending on the cause of the disease that caused the rise in temperature, as well as the state of the patient’s immune system, the elevated temperature can last long enough. Therefore, if the temperature of 38 ° C lasts for 2-3 days or longer, and the patient’s condition does not improve, it is necessary to call a doctor. Only a specialist will be able to establish the cause that caused the rise in temperature and prescribe the correct treatment.
Popular questions and answers
We discussed with physician-therapist Ekaterina Buchholz the question of why antipyretic drugs may not work, when and to whom to contact when the temperature rises, and whether traditional medicine can be practiced.
Why is the antipyretic not working?
And one more thing – the task of antipyretics is not to bring the temperature down to normal, but to lower it to safe numbers, and they do not always have to be standard 36,6 ° C in the acute period. Even a decrease in temperature below 38,0 ° C is a good effect of the drug.
