The coronavirus pandemic has forced us to switch from traditional doctor visits to telepaths. A modern solution works well in many situations, but it is not ideal. What does it look like in oncology? When is a TV visit enough, and when is it necessary to go to a consultation in person?
- The coronavirus pandemic has made teleporting advances in every area of medicine
- Experts warn that in the event of symptoms indicating cancer, television visits are not recommended – you need to consult a doctor personally

Doctors have no doubts that the most important thing is to seek help at all – be it using telemedicine or in a traditional way. Unfortunately, the fear of infection, as well as the overload of Polish health care during the epidemic, made patients more and more often ignore their ailments, wanting to wait out their worse well-being. Unfortunately, this is a very wrong approach that can be fatal.
– Diseases have not gone away. Exactly as many people are ill as before the pandemic and they need to be treated – appeals prof. dr hab. Jacek Jassem, MD, an oncologist who took part in the nationwide campaign “Diseases do not wait for the pandemic to end. Fight for health », prepared by the Independent Team of Health Experts Continue Curatio.
— Neoplastic diseases are of a special nature. They don’t stop developing. Delaying diagnosis and treatment can have huge negative consequences. Sometimes it means losing the chance of a recovery. These sick people cannot wait for the pandemic to pass. Healthcare must be prepared to effectively treat these patients despite the pandemic, says the expert.
And he adds: – We encourage patients not to stay home despite the pandemic when they see disturbing symptoms – those that may be the beginning of cancer. It is not the patients who have to diagnose their symptoms, but they also cannot wait for the pandemic to end. They should see a doctor. Only he can decide whether the patient requires further diagnosis and treatment. If the patient does not report, the doctor will not have this chance.

Teleporting in oncology – when are they a good solution?
The Continue Curatio team has developed rules on when and to what extent the use of telemedicine is recommended.
In the case of oncological diseases, the viewer will check the initial health assessment.
E-health tools can also be used to plan and coordinate diagnostic procedures – by phone or during an on-line visit, you can discuss with your doctor what tests should be performed. The specialist can issue the necessary referrals during teleportation.

Teleportation in oncology – when TV viewing cannot be used?
Experts from Continue Curatio clearly warn that a TV viewer cannot replace traditional on-site consultation if there is any symptom suggesting cancer.
Telephone or online contact is also not enough when the patient needs to undergo a physical examination, i.e. when the doctor needs to see, auscultate or palpate.
If the doctor determines that a traditional visit is necessary, patients should go to a medical facility.
Television visits are also not recommended in the event of a sudden deterioration of health, and in newborns and children up to 12 weeks of age, when symptoms appear that alarm parents.
Doctors give alarm not to underestimate the symptoms and not be afraid of visits to specialists.
– Statistics show that the number of consultations with primary care physicians and specialists has decreased significantly. The number of DILO cards issued and procedures performed, even interventional ones, also dropped dramatically. During the lockdown, there was an over 30% decrease in the number of patients treated in stroke units. For many of them, it means severe disability or death. The mentioned benefits cannot be replaced by teleportation. In such cases, she absolutely does not provide adequate care – Prof. Bolesław Samoliński, Head of the Department of Public and Environmental Health at the Medical University of Warsaw, chairman of the Patient Rights Experts Council, head of the Independent Team of Experts of the Continue Curatio.
