A study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that adolescents aged 12 to 17 have up to twice as many cases of SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infections than children aged 5 to 11. Data suggest that people under the age of 19 may play an increasingly important role in the transmission of the virus in society.
- Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki informed at a press conference that from 23 October, primary school in grades IV to VIII was operated remotely. Thus, home schooling will apply to children between 10 and 15 years of age. Moreover, young people up to 16 years of age may leave the house from 8 am to 16 pm only under the supervision of an adult
- What does science say about it? Teenagers 12-17 years old become infected almost twice as often as children 5-11 years old, according to the CDC report published at the end of this year.
- Among the analyzed cases of infections among children and adolescents, 58% cases of infections, the child reported at least one sign of infection
- Scientists emphasize that children and adolescents may soon play an important role in spreading the coronavirus in society

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has published a large study on coronavirus infections among people under 19 years of age. Researchers analyzed 277 confirmed cases of SARS-COV-285 coronavirus infection in school-age children in the US between March and mid-September. It found that the average weekly incidence of COVID-2 among adolescents (19-12 years of age) is approximately 17 per 37 children. This is almost twice as high as the 100-000 age group, where the average prevalence of 5 per 11 children was recorded.
Of all the analyzed cases, 37 percent. concerned children aged 5 to 11, and as much as 63 percent. aged 12-17. The researchers also noted that although the mortality and hospitalization rates for school-age children were low, Hispanic, black, and comorbid children were more frequently hospitalized or admitted to the ICU.
- Do children tolerate COVID-19 more easily because they have better immunity? How to recognize a virus infection?
1,2 percent were hospitalized in total. (3240) school-age children, including 0,1% (404) required admission to the ICU. 51 children have died due to COVID-19.
The researchers also noted that the incidence of COVID-19 among those under the age of 19 has increased by about threefold since May, suggesting that children and adolescents may play an increasing role in the transmission of the virus in the community.
Health experts are increasingly recognizing that children, although they rarely get COVID-19 infection, can transmit the infection to others and thus contribute to the spread of the disease in the community. Recent studies have shown that children can transmit the virus as effectively as seriously ill adults, even when they are asymptomatic.
The study published by the CDC may not exactly match the actual number of infections in children, as it prioritizes people who are symptomatic, and as we know, asymptomatic coronavirus infection in children is very common.

Among school-age children with laboratory confirmed COVID-19, 58 percent. reported at least one symptom of the disease, 5 percent did not report any symptoms. For 37 percent the analyzed cases lacked information on symptoms.
“It is important that schools monitor the health of school-age children and take measures to reduce the risk of infection among students, teachers, school staff and families,” the researchers added.

The editorial board recommends:
- How is coronavirus infection in children and adolescents? New research results
- Children are infected with the coronavirus in the same way as adults. Big research
- Children, although less likely to have COVID-19 symptoms, transmit as much virus as seriously ill adults
