Tears are the secretion of the lacrimal glands located under the upper eyelid in the upper outer corner of the orbit. It is a slightly alkaline liquid containing NaCl, mucus and a small amount of proteins (e.g. lysozyme).
Tears are secreted in the amount needed to moisten the cornea and conjunctiva, and excess tears are drained into the nasolacrimal canal. Increased production of tears (lacrimation) – reflex – occurs under the influence of e.g. strong light, specific chemical compounds, irritation of the conjunctiva, as well as under the influence of emotional factors.
