Tea bags: what is important to know about them

We are so used to a convenient filter paper tea bag that we don’t even think about who came up with this simple, but such a convenient invention.

The tea bag we are used to had predecessors. Thank you so much for the convenience of drinking tea in small tea bags, we must say to Sir Thomas Sullivan. It was he who in 1904 came up with the idea of repacking tea from cans into silk bags to make the delivery weight lighter.

And somehow his customers, having received the product in such a new package, decided that it should be brewed in this way – by placing the bag in hot water!

And the modern look of the tea bag was invented by Rambold Adolph in 1929. He replaced expensive silk with more budget gauze. A little later, the gauze was replaced by bags of special paper, which did not soak in water, but let it pass. In 1950, the design of a double chamber pouch was introduced, which was held together by a metal bracket.

The shape of a modern bag can be triangular, rectangular, square, round, pyramid-like, with or without ropes. There are also individual tea bags in which you can pack the tea to your liking by mixing several types of tea. Large paper bags are also available for brewing more than one cup of tea at a time.

The pouches are made from chemically neutral filter paper consisting of wood, thermoplastic and abaca fibers. Not so long ago, bags of fine-mesh plastic mesh appeared, in which large tea raw materials are packaged. To preserve the aroma of tea, some manufacturers pack each bag in a separate envelope made of paper or foil.

And what exactly is in the bag?

Of course, it is difficult to see the composition of tea bags. We cannot determine the quality of tea, and often manufacturers deceive us by mixing several types in one bag – both cheap and more expensive. Therefore, the reputation of the manufacturer is very important in the selection of tea bags.

In addition to the mystery about the composition of the tea, the quality of the tea bags itself can be inferior. This is due to less low control at the production itself, because only selected leaves get into loose tea, and a part of a low-quality leaf, roughly speaking, gets into a bagged tea. Shredding the leaf also plays a role, the aroma and some of the taste are lost.

This does not necessarily mean that the tea bags are of poor quality. Most manufacturers, however, do not want to lose their customers and keep an eye on the filling of the filter bags.

But it is impossible to replace high-quality large leaf tea. Therefore, feel free to buy proven tea bags if speed and convenience of brewing are important to you, for example, at work. And at home, you can brew real tea using the correct sequence and utensils for brewing a healthy aromatic drink.

Recall that earlier we told how to properly add lemon to tea so as not to kill its beneficial properties, and also explained why it is impossible to brew tea for more than 3 minutes.
