Tea: what about for weight loss?

In France1, 32% of the adult population is overweight compared to 33% in Quebec2.

Being overweight can lead to cardiovascular complications. To lose weight, the body must, among other things, expend energy and burn calories.

The components of tea, that is to say theine and catechins including epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) promote energy expenditure without reducing body mass. Some studies3 have nevertheless shown that people whose diet was balanced and who consume tea, without any other caffeinated drink, reduced their weight in the long term.

It seems that the effect of tea on energy expenditure is more convincing when the content of epigallocatechin-3-gallate (a powerful antioxidant with multiple benefits) is sufficient. According to’United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), a green tea infusion contains 20 times more epigallocatechin-3-gallate than bottled tea.

If you are starting a diet, it may be beneficial to replace sugary drinks with infused green tea.
