Tazocin – leaflet, price, substitutes. A drug used in complicated infections

Bacterial infections can occur, for example, during hospital treatment. Drug treatment is then required. One of the preparations that can be used in such situations is Tazocin in the form of a powder for the preparation of a solution. Its use, however, can lead to a number of side effects. It is worth reading the leaflet before use.

Tazocin – indications

Tazocin is a powdered drug contained in vials for reconstitution and preparation of solutions. The use of Tazocin is recommended for certain infections in adults and children over 2 years of age. In adolescents and adults it is about:

  1. complicated infections within the abdominal cavity,
  2. complications in urinary tract infections,
  3. severe pneumonia, including nosocomial and ventilator use
  4. complications in soft tissue infections (including diabetic foot infections) and skin.

In children from 2 to 12 years of age, administration of Tazocin is indicated in the following cases:

  1. complications in infection within the abdominal cavity.

Tazocin is indicated for the treatment of people with neutropenia who have a fever resulting from a bacterial infection. Treatment takes place in a hospital setting.

Tazocin – composition

One vial of Tazocin contains:

  1. 4 g of piperacin in the form of sodium salt
  2. 0,5 g of tazobactam, also in the form of sodium salt,
  3. 256 mg sodium,
  4. auxiliary substances.

Tazocin – contraindications

The situations in which you should refrain from taking Tazocin are:

  1. hypersensitivity to any substance contained in the preparation,
  2. hypersensitivity to any beta-lactam antibiotic, including carbapenem, cephalosporin or monobactam.

Tazocin – side effects

The most common side effects caused by Tazocin include:

  1. nausea,
  2. vomiting,
  3. diarrhea,
  4. rash.

In addition, the following side effects of Tazocin therapy may occur less frequently:

  1. superinfection with yeast,
  2. leukopenia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia,
  3. anemia,
  4. plamica,
  5. epistaxis,
  6. anaphylactic reactions
  7. headaches,
  8. insomnia,
  9. constipation
  10. hot flushes,
  11. rash, erythema multiforme, dermatitis bullous,
  12. muscle and joint pain,
  13. hives, itching
  14. chills.

Tazocin – dosage

Tazocin is administered as an intravenous infusion lasting approximately 30 minutes. Drug therapy lasts from 5 to 14 days, but in practice depends on the severity of the infection, the type of pathogen, and the progression of the disease.

The size of the dose and the frequency of taking Tazocin depends on the location and severity of the infection, as well as the type of pathogens anticipated. However, the usual dosage regimen for adults is:

  1. 4 g piperacillin and 0,5 g tazobactam every 6 hours in patients with neutropenia, fever due to bacterial infection, in people with nosocomial pneumonia and complicated urinary tract infection,
  2. 4 g of piperacillin and 0,5 g of tazobactam every 8 hours for complicated infections in the abdominal cavity and soft tissue and skin infections,
  3. 4 g piperacillin and 0,5 g tazobactam every 8 hours for patients with renal impairment where creatinine clearance is 20-40 ml / min,
  4. 4 g of piperacillin and 0,5 g of tazobactam every 12 hours for renal dysfunction and creatinine clearance levels above 40 ml / min,
  5. an additional dose of piperacillin 2 g and tazobactam 0,25 g after each dialysis in people treated with hemodialysis.

Dosage and frequency of taking Tazocin in children 2-12 years old:

  1. 80 mg piperacillin and 10 mg tazobactam per kilogram of body weight every 6 hours in children with neutropenia and fever resulting from bacterial infection (max 4 g piperacillin and 0,5 g tazobactam per 30 min),
  2. 100 mg of piperacillin and 12,5 mg of tazobactam per kilogram of body weight every 8 hours in children with complicated infections in the abdominal cavity (max 4 g of piperacillin and 0,5 g of tazobactam per 30 min),
  3. 70 mg piperacillin and 8,75 mg tazobactam per kilogram of body weight every 8 hours in children with renal impairment with a creatinine clearance index above 50 ml / day,
  4. 40 mg piperacillin and 5 mg tazobactam per kilogram body weight after each dialysis.

Tazocin is available on prescription only. Its price is around PLN 1100 for a pack of 12 vials.
