Tarragon grass: planting, care and cultivation
Tarragon is a perennial herb. It is planted to obtain spicy fragrant greens. There are many ways to grow a culture. She will not bring much trouble to care.
Growing tarragon at their summer cottage
Another name for tarragon is tarragon. This spicy green has a rich flavor. It can be used for canning vegetables, desserts and drinks. It is also known as a medicine. Tarragon is grown in the garden or at home in flower pots.
Tarragon grass has long narrow leaves
Tarhun is a tall bush up to 1,5 meters. Its leaves are thin and long. The size of the leaf can reach 7 cm. The plant blooms in August with yellow flowers collected in panicles.
Sunny areas are suitable for planting. This herb grows well in partial shade, but at the same time it loses some of its aroma. Tarhun loves light fertile soils, does not tolerate stagnant water and high acidity of the soil.
Planting tarragon and how to reproduce it
The most famous are 3 varieties of tarragon: “French”, “Russian” and “Gribovsky”. All of these varieties can be planted by seed through seedlings. Plant tarragon in early March. Spread the seeds in boxes with a mixture of humus and sand to a depth of 3 mm. Drizzle with water and cover with plastic wrap. The first shoots can appear only on the 25th day. In early May, seedlings should be dived and transplanted into a greenhouse.
This method is the most time consuming, it is suitable if there are no mature bushes. It’s easier to propagate tarragon in a different way:
- By dividing the bush. Dig up an adult bush and carefully separate the part from it, which should contain both the buds and part of the root. Plant both plants.
- Cuttings. Cut off a shoot 10-20 cm. Plant it in a mixture of fertile soil and sand, pour water and place in a greenhouse. After 3 weeks, the plant can be planted in a permanent place. Cuttings should be carried out in the spring or early summer.
- Root processes. At the beginning of spring, the roots must be dug up and divided into several parts. Each part of the root will give a new plant. The process should be planted in the same way as the cuttings.
The latter method is quite effective, although not very common. You need to plant tarragon in a new place at a distance of 60 cm from each other. Until the bush has taken root, you need to cover it from the sun.
Tarragon requires easy care. It should be watered rarely – 2-3 times a month. You can feed it in the second year in the spring with complex fertilizer. The main concern is weeding and loosening the soil. You can cut the greens until August: later the plant begins to bloom. In September, it is necessary to carry out the last pruning for hemp 6 cm long and feed the tarragon with superphosphate. It is advisable to mulch the soil around with peat or compost.
Tarragon is easy to grow and easy to propagate. This unpretentious perennial will provide fragrant greens all summer long.
