Tantum Verde is an over-the-counter medication that is used topically for inflammation of the mouth and throat. The active ingredient in Tantum Verde is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug called benzydamine. This compound has a local anti-inflammatory effect, protecting the vessels and not causing gastric ulceration. Benzydamine reduces the appearance of leukocyte-induced vessel changes and also stops leukocyte degranulation and aggregation. Tantum Verde also acts as an anti-swelling, disinfectant, anesthetic and analgesic. The active substance Tantum Verde is very well absorbed and reaches a high concentration in tissues that have become inflamed. It penetrates to the circulatory system to a minimal extent, so it practically does not have a general effect. This property makes pregnant women more likely to use this preparation in case of inflammation.

Tantum Verde in pregnancy – indications for the use of the drug

The main indication for the use of Tantum Verde is the treatment of symptoms associated with conditions such as inflammation of the mouth and throat. Tantum Verde helps especially with bacterial and viral infections. This preparation can be used in inflammation of the mucous membranes after radiotherapy, after dental surgery or after intubation.

Tantum Verde in pregnancy – contraindications to use

A contraindication to the use of Tantum Verde is hypersensitivity to the active substance or any component of the drug. Particular care should be taken when using Tantum Verde, if after a week of treatment supported by this preparation, you do not notice any improvement. Long-term use of Tantum Verde can cause an allergic reaction in the body that manifests itself in the form of a rash or hives on the body. It can also lead to more serious complications, even shock.

Tantum Verde in pregnancy – can it harm a baby

Pregnant women should always consult a doctor before taking any medication. The same applies to the decision to use Tantum Verde during pregnancy. There have been no relevant studies that would clearly specify the possible harmfulness of the drug on the development of the baby in the mother’s womb. Regardless of the indication for use of the drug, always ask the doctor in charge of the pregnancy in advance.

Tantum Verde in pregnancy – how to dose?

Tantum Verde is available in the form of an aerosol that is used to sprinkle the oral cavity, as well as a liquid that rinses the inside of the mouth. The preparation can be used in 4-8 doses, 2-6 times a day. Tantum Verde should not be used by a patient for more than 7 days without consulting a doctor. Smaller doses are given to children under 6 years of age.
