Taninal – composition, action, precautions. How to take Taninal?

Taninal is an over-the-counter medicinal product containing tannin proteinate. Taninal is used primarily in the treatment of various types of problems in the digestive system, including diarrhea, abdominal pain and food poisoning.

Composition and action of Taninal

The composition of Taninal includes the active substance – tannin proteinate (Tanninum albuminatum). It is a combination of tannin and protein albumin. Tannin belongs to the group of compounds called tannins. As a result of combining tannins with proteins, they are released with a certain delay, only in the area of the small intestine. As a result, the formulation does not come into contact with the mucosa lining the stomach tissues. When released in the intestines, tannin has a beneficial astringent, anti-inflammatory and bacteriostatic effect. In addition, it acts as an anti-diarrhea, leading to the binding of bacterial toxins. The other benefits of taking tannins are the inhibition of slight bleeding from capillaries in the intestinal mucosa, which may have caused microdamage.

The excipients present in the preparation include: potato starch, povidone, talc and sodium carboxymethyl starch.

One package of Taninal contains 20 tablets containing 500 mg of the active ingredient (tannin proteinate). The producer of Taninal is Wrocławskie Zakłady Zielarskie “Herbapol” SA with its seat in Wrocław. The price of one package is usually less than PLN 10.

How should Taninal be taken?

Taninal is an over-the-counter drug. Use it as described on the leaflet or as instructed by the prescribing physician or pharmacist. Taninal should be taken orally, without chewing the tablet or crushing it into smaller parts, washing it down with cool water. It is recommended to take the drug between meals.

Taninal is taken on an ad hoc basis in the event of certain disease symptoms. For adults, it is recommended to take 1-2 tablets 3 times a day. Children and adolescents under 18 years of age should take half or the whole tablet 2-3 times a day. It is not recommended for use in children under 4 years of age. It is also worth mentioning that Taninal is not intended for long-term use. If, after 2-3 days of treatment, the unpleasant symptoms persist, consult your doctor about the course of further treatment. In the case of younger children, the maximum duration of treatment should not be longer than 1 day.

It is not recommended to take higher doses than described in the package leaflet. Increasing the dose does not adversely affect the effectiveness of the preparation. Also, if the planned dose is omitted, the course of the treatment should not be modified.

It is worth adding that sometimes Taninal is administered in the treatment of domestic animals. Especially in the case of gastrointestinal problems, Taninal is given to the dog or to the cat. However, it should be noted that this form of treatment, although commonly used by many animal keepers, requires consultation with a veterinarian.

Precautions while taking Taninal

Taninal is a relatively safe preparation, but not all groups of people should use it. First of all, do not take Taninal if you are allergic or hypersensitive to tannin proteinate or any of the other ingredients. In addition, the preparation should not be taken in the company of other drugs or supplements taken orally. It is recommended to keep a break of at least a full 2 hours between taking Taninal and other medications. This is due to the fact that Taninal may inhibit the level of absorption of other drugs. It is recommended to drink plenty of fluids during the treatment.

Taninal may be used in the case of pregnant women and young breastfeeding mothers. However, you should consult your doctor about the willingness to use this preparation. The conducted studies did not show a clear effect of taking Taninal on the development or health of the fetus. In addition, Taninal does not affect the work of the mind, for this reason, after taking it, you can drive cars and operate machines and devices.

Taking Taninal may lead to side effects. The most common are disorders in the work of the stomach and intestines (vomiting, abdominal pain, nausea). These symptoms are rare (between 1 and 10 patients in 10 people taking the medicine). Most often, they occur as a result of taking more than the prescribed dose of the drug. Any other symptoms that may arise as a consequence of taking Taninal should be immediately reported to a doctor or pharmacist.
