Tampax

The Tampax brand of feminine hygiene tampons is part of the multinational company Procter & Gamble, along with 300 other brands. The date of invention of tampons is considered to be the 1930s, however, the fact of the use of such a product by Hippocrates as early as the 5th century BC is known in history, which was described in the writings of a Greek surgeon. And in the 19th century, analogues of cotton swabs were used in medicine during various surgical interventions to absorb liquid secretions. Well, in the modern sense, cotton swabs began to be used only at the beginning of the 20th century, thanks to the efforts of one gynecologist, who constantly sought to develop his own medical industry and repeatedly introduced stunning innovations to the medical products market at that time.

Brand History

The first applicator tampons originated in Denver, USA on December 1, 1931. This date is the moment of obtaining a patent for the production of tampons and at the same time – the registration of the Tampax trademark, the name of which consists of 2 English words – tampon (tampon) and packaging (pack). Tampons were registered by gynecologist Earl Haas, who constantly heard from his wife and patients that they would like to have an inconspicuous device in their arsenal that could save them from critical days and all the troubles associated with them.

A few years earlier, this gynecologist had already patented an expensive invention – the contraceptive ring (diaphragm, which is the prototype of the cap for the cervix) and sold this patent for 50 thousand dollars.

The invention of the tampon became the object of his development after a California colleague of Dr. Haas told him that local ladies during critical days use intravaginal placement of sea sponges that can absorb blood instead of hygiene products during critical days. Based on this information, the gynecologist decided to create something similar, but more convenient to use. For these purposes, the doctor tried to use ordinary cotton napkins, which he repeatedly folded and stitched on a sewing machine. However, such a device was very difficult to use, and then Dr. Haas came up with an applicator. For its manufacture, he used 2 tubes of pressed cardboard with different diameters, in one of which he placed a stitched napkin, and placed the second in such a way that it could go inside the first, pushing the cotton inside out. It was the applicator that complemented the tampon that became the key to the popularity of this hygiene device. All the doubts that arose at first in women who wanted to use tampons disappeared due to the convenience of their use.

For almost a century of history, Tampax has hardly changed either externally or internally. In the modern world, these tampons are incredibly popular. But at the time when Dr. Haas first patented the tampon, not a single pharmaceutical company wanted to start industrial production of Tampax.

Dr. Haas tried for a long time to interest various companies with his know-how, including Johnson & Johnson, already famous at that time, but all was in vain. Only in 1933 did the doctor manage to sell his patent, along with the trademark, to a German immigrant and entrepreneur, Gertrude Tendrich, for $32. The new owner initially made tampons by hand at home using a sewing and tamping machine, just as Dr. Haas did. However, in 1934, the new mistress of the invention established her own company, Tampax Sales Corporation, and personally headed it. She failed to enter the wide markets due to lack of funds, and then in 1936 Tendrich and new partners created another company, Tampax Incorporated, which managed to bring the invention to the mass market in the same year. Tampax products instantly won a leading position among sales of similar products, outselling even the then famous Kimberly-Clark “Fibs” tampons, later known under the brand name “The Kotex Tampon”.

After tampons entered the market, manufacturers were faced with a lot of questions from consumers about their correct use. To answer these questions, Tampax Incorporated set up a medical education department in 1941 that still operates around the world to work with adolescent girls. In Russia, such educational seminars are held by doctors who tell girls the anatomical and physiological features of using tampons in the female body.

In 1969, Dr. Haas was recognized by the London edition of the “Sunday Times” as one of the “1000 creators of the 20th century”. After Dr. Haas sold the tampon patent, he continued to work in gynecology and various businesses. In the future, he repeatedly regretted selling Tampax, although he was pleased with such successes of his own know-how. Until his death in 1981, Dr. Haas tried to improve tampons.

The Tampax range

The modern range of Tampax tampons is represented by several varieties of hygiene products, which, in turn, can be represented by different absorbency characteristics. In total, there are 3 types of Tampax on the market today:

  • “Tampax” with applicator;
  • «Tampax Pearl»;
  • «Tampax Compak».

All of the above tampons are applicator and differ only in the quality of the materials from which they are made, as well as in size.

Tampons “Tampax” with an applicator are equipped with a conventional cardboard applicator, which is easy to use. Depending on the degree of absorption, there is an indicator on the packages with the number of drops for which these tampons are designed. Also, the intensity of the discharge is determined by the names of the series – Regular is for medium discharge, Super for intense, and Super Plus for very plentiful. Maximum protection can be obtained for up to 8 hours of use. In addition to the applicator, tampons are equipped with a special anti-slip skirt, which additionally prevents the occurrence of leaks.

Tampax Pearl tampons are equipped with a special plastic applicator with a relief created using SmoothTouch technology, which allows it to follow the shape of a woman’s body and contributes to the comfortable insertion of the tampon itself. Soft expansion together with a special weave of the cord prevent leaks, and a comfortable, noiseless packaging when opened allows you to use these tampons in absolutely any situation.

Tampax Pearl’s absorbency levels vary in the same way as classic tampons.

Smooth and compact thanks to the retractable applicator, Tampax Compak tampons are equipped with additional skirts and special grooves that prevent leakage, and, despite their miniature size, can protect a woman for up to 8 hours from all the troubles of critical days. These tampons have a special shape that is rounded at the end, which contributes to their more comfortable use.

Brand activity

When Tampax tampons were just beginning their phenomenal rise to the top of the personal care line, education was the main factor that helped them become so popular. And today, it is education that helps the brand to maintain interest in itself, because women with Tampax, almost 100 years ago, and today, can attend colleges and universities, go to receptions and meetings, transfer information to each other about how much this tool can make life easier for ladies. Those who sold Tampax in the past were constantly answering multiple questions, engaging in encouraging their customers, which ultimately led to huge sales figures.

Marketing activities began when Tampax entered the market with very correct formulations, such as “swimming without obstacles”, “feminine silhouette” and others, helping to figuratively imagine how difficult a woman’s fate is without these products.

After the first jumps in sales, the Tampax brand became so successful that the manufacturers did not think about any innovations. Tampax packaging did not change until the 80-90s of the 20th century. It wasn’t until Procter & Gamble introduced the brand to its portfolio of proven products in 1997 that Time Magazine named it the most innovative women’s comfort invention of the 1998th century in 20.

Tampax evolved in the 2000s with the launch of new product lines with a smoother applicator, rounded tip, various technologies to prevent leaks and promote safe retrieval. The raw materials used for the manufacture of these tampons are absolutely natural and safe, they can be easily disposed of and they are harmless to the natural environment. At the same time, all materials, as well as subsequent products, must undergo bacteriological control in special laboratories of the brand.

Advertising campaigns of the brand in the modern world have become more reflective of the progressiveness and activity of modern women. Tampax’s 2008 slogan, “Outsmart Mother Nature,” became the slogan for the brand’s global advertising campaign, which was subsequently supported by many active and famous women, such as tennis player Serena Williams. After it, advertising the brand’s products has already become prestigious (and not only not ashamed, as it was before). Many well-known athletes, singers, actresses and other popular people have repeatedly taken part in various advertising and educational promotions from Tampax around the world.

The attitude to education remained unchanged in the philosophy of Tampax. Today, the brand is the most specialized and high-quality source of information about the menstrual cycle for young women. A new portal devchat.ru has been created, where every woman can find answers to constantly arising questions about this phenomenon of female physiology. Also on the portal, experts in the field of gynecology debunk the most popular myths among the population about the harmfulness or discomfort of women’s tampons. The purpose of Tampax advertising today is to make it clear to everyone around that women have no boundaries.
