Take a deep breath and… don’t be afraid to fly

The vacation period is a time of frequent travels. In airplanes, we cannot get rid of excess baggage in the form of fear. How does it manifest itself and how to get rid of it? This is a question that has been asked for years.

Research shows that 30 percent of all travelers feel fear of flying, and half of them are completely unable to cope with it. Surprisingly, pilots are also familiar with this feeling. With them, however, the fear manifests itself much later, most often when it is too late to change profession.

Suddenly, it starts shaking, a warning light flashes upstairs to fasten the seat belts, and the pilot’s voice comes from the loudspeakers, begging to be seated. The flight is expected to last five more hours, and the fear is growing every minute. How to deal with this?

Certainly, the solution to the situation is not to change the means of transport, because we can hardly cover such distances as by plane by train, bus or car. You can try alcohol – it relaxes the muscles, thoughts drift away in an unknown direction, but not everyone can afford it, and the side effects are not worth it.

Recently, one therapist who specializes in combating stress and fear in normal everyday situations has come to the conclusion that tension is best relieved by gentle tapping of the hand on any part of the body. This is called Meridiane and it is intended to release the blockages that stop the flow of energy. Drops, which are available on board from flight attendants, may also be a solution to the situation.

One psychologist Ernst Hackl argues that the sources of the fear of flying may lie deep in the past, and the person concerned may be unaware of them. It can be a traumatic experience, not necessarily related to flying.

Breathing exercises are helpful in fighting fear. Thanks to this, you can direct your thoughts in a completely different direction. When fear arises, breathing becomes shallow. This cannot be allowed to happen. In this case, first let out all the collected air through your mouth and not breathe at all for a while. After five seconds, air should be drawn into the lungs again. It is important to do this with your belly and not move your chest at all. After a minute of repetition, you can already see the results. Man calms down and relaxes.

The source of fear is different situations, and then rational arguments can do little. Hackl believes that some people are afraid that they have no control over the plane and are relying on someone’s skills, others panic when they think that an accident may occur. Fear can be so strong that it can appear several days before the trip. And when does it end? And here is another oddity – just before landing. And that’s when it is the most dangerous. (PAP Life)
