Tabex is a drug used to treat nicotine addiction. By using Tabex, you can gradually reduce the body’s addiction to nicotine. This allows you to slowly wean from smoking without the unbearable symptoms of nicotine withdrawal. The use of the preparation is aimed at discontinuing nicotine-containing products.
Tabex – ingredients
The active substance of Tabex is cytisine 1,5 mg. Among the auxiliary substances are lactose, microcrystalline cellulose, talc and magnesium stearate up to 100 mg. The Tabex coating contains hypromellose, lactose monohydrate, titanium dioxide, polyethylene glycol 3000, tracetine, yellow iron oxide, red iron oxide and black iron oxide.
It should be remembered that the composition of Tabex contains lactose.
Tabex – indications
The indication for the use of Tabex is nicotine addiction.

Tabex – action
The active substance of Tabex is the cytosine alkaloid. It can be found, for example, in the seeds of Laburnum. This substance affects the action of N-cholinergic, i.e. nicotinic receptors. This substance stimulates and paralyzes the vegetative ganglia of the nervous system.
The action of cytisine can be compared to that of nicotine. It is absorbed and gradually displaces nicotine as it targets the same receptors as nicotine. Thanks to this, the active substance of Tabex gradually reduces the body’s addiction to nicotine, and thus, we get used to smoking. Importantly, Tabex does not cause withdrawal symptoms.
Smokers who use Tabex slowly cut back on smoking because they no longer need as much nicotine. However, to quit smoking by applying Tabex preparation it takes a strong will and motivation to get rid of the addiction.
Tabex – contraindications
Tabex should not be used by:
- people with peptic ulcer disease – they should be especially careful;
- pregnant and lactating women.

Tabex – application
Tabex should be used as described in the leaflet. If we have any doubts about the use of the preparation, consult a doctor or pharmacist. Tabex is for oral use. Dosage:
- for the first 3 days of use, take 1 tablet every two hours – a total of 6 tablets a day, during the course of gradually reducing the number of cigarettes;
- from the 4th to the 12th day, 1 tablet is taken for 2,5 hours – 5 tablets a day;
- from the 13th to the 16th day, 1 tablet is taken for up to 3 hours – 4 tablets a day;
- from the 17th to the 20th day, 1 tablet is taken every 5 hours – 3 tablets a day;
- From day 21 to day 25, 1-2 tablets are taken a day.
You should definitely stop smoking while using Tabex. This should be done up to the 5th day of taking the drug. If we make this effort, we should not break this resolution. Smoking even one cigarette has a negative impact on the durability of the effects of Tabex treatment.
The Tabex treatment should be repeated after about 4-5 months.

Tabex – side effects
Tabex, like all medicines, may lead to the development of side effects. However, it should be remembered that they will not appear in every person. People taking high doses of Tabex have reported:
- nausea;
- vomiting;
- dizziness;
- contractions;
- muscle weakness.
Tabex side effects disappear when the dose is lowered.

Tabex – precautions
Some people need to take precautions when taking Tabex. These are:
- ischemic heart disease;
- heart failure;
- hypertension;
- pheochromocytoma of the adrenal gland;
- atherosclerosis;
- gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer;
- gastroesophageal reflux disease;
- hyperthyroidism;
- diabetes;
- some forms of schizophrenia;
- renal and hepatic failure.
Tabex is not recommended in the elderly due to the lack of data on the effects of the drug on people over 65 years of age.
Tabex has no effect on psychomotor skills, which means that it does not affect the ability to drive and use machines. In addition, people with intolerance to certain sugars should be especially careful, because Tabex contains lactose. One tablet contains 28 mg of lactose.
In addition, Tabex should only be used by people who have a strong decision to quit. Taking the drug and continuing to smoke cigarettes may increase the undesirable effects of nicotine. There are also no data on the effects of Tabex in children and adolescents under 18 years of age.
Tabex – interactions
Before starting to use Tabex, inform your doctor about all medicines you are taking, including those without a prescription. The preparation should not be taken simultaneously with anti-tuberculosis drugs.
Tabex – pregnancy and breastfeeding
During pregnancy and breastfeeding, you should not take any medications without consulting your doctor. Always consult your doctor or pharmacist. At the same time, remember not to use Tabex if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
