Syntonic influence is the ability to conduct a conflict conversation so that it does not provoke a defensive reaction from partners and promotes cooperation.

The usual steps here are:

1. Admit you have a problem.

Let’s say you’re trying to study for your hardest subject test and your roommate has turned on the tape recorder at full blast. So, in order to solve the problem, you make the decision to talk to your neighbor. You can effectively explain your problem to her if you start by saying, “Hi. Could you help me with one thing? I am trying to prepare for the exam… This is the most difficult exam…”.

2. Describe the potential conflict in terms of the behavior you observe, the possible consequences, and how you feel.
