Symptoms, people at risk and risk factors for sciatica (neuralgia)
Symptoms of the disease
- A severe pain triggered in the lower back or a buttock, which radiates to the thigh, calf and foot. The pain can come on like an electric shock, or it can be mild but constant. It is usually worse when sitting, coughing and straining, and relieved when lying down.
- benefits tingling, numbness and muscle weakness in parts of the affected leg and foot
People at risk
- People with osteoarthritis or certain forms of arthritis.
- Pregnant women. The weight of the belly, combined with increased secretion of a hormone that softens the tissues, and the uterus which can compress the sciatic nerve, can cause sciatica.
Risk factors
- Participate in a sport or work requiring frequent lifting of heavy loads, bending or twisting of the trunk.
- Remain seated for several hours at a time.
- Do little physical activity.
- Have excess weight.
- Have bad posture.
- Have weak abdominal muscles.
