Symptoms, people and risk factors for onychomycosis

Symptoms of the disease

  • Coloring yellowish ou brownish of a fingernail;
  • THEthickening of a fingernail;
  • The change of forms of a fingernail;
  • A nail friable and without luster;
  • A pain when pressure is exerted on the nail;
  • The nail can become black and separate from his bed.

 

People at risk

The nails become more susceptible to onychomycosis with agebecause they thicken and grow more slowly.

  • People with family history onychomycosis. Genetic characteristics have been associated with better resistance to onychomycosis ;
  • People with untreated athlete’s foot, another fungal infection that touches the skin between the toes. Large-scale study says about a third of people with onychomycosis also have athlete’s foot8. It is suspected that the infection causing athlete’s foot may spread to the fingernails, and vice versa;
  • The people who sweat abundantly;
  • People with diabetes;
  • People who have a poor blood circulation at the feet ;
  • People with weakened immune system, such as carriers of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

 

Risk factors

  • Wear some shoes to socks that retain moisture;
  • Have a inadequate foot hygiene.
