Symptoms, people and risk factors for onychomycosis
Symptoms of the disease
- Coloring yellowish ou brownish of a fingernail;
- THEthickening of a fingernail;
- The change of forms of a fingernail;
- A nail friable and without luster;
- A pain when pressure is exerted on the nail;
- The nail can become black and separate from his bed.
People at risk
The nails become more susceptible to onychomycosis with agebecause they thicken and grow more slowly.
- People with family history onychomycosis. Genetic characteristics have been associated with better resistance to onychomycosis ;
- People with untreated athlete’s foot, another fungal infection that touches the skin between the toes. Large-scale study says about a third of people with onychomycosis also have athlete’s foot8. It is suspected that the infection causing athlete’s foot may spread to the fingernails, and vice versa;
- The people who sweat abundantly;
- People with diabetes;
- People who have a poor blood circulation at the feet ;
- People with weakened immune system, such as carriers of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Risk factors
- Wear some shoes to socks that retain moisture;
- Have a inadequate foot hygiene.
