Symptoms of simple, paranoid and catatonic schizophrenia: just about the complex

As you have already noticed, the topic of mental disorders is extremely popular today. The general emotional and mental stress in society is steadily approaching its peak. In fact, such trends could be observed throughout the history of mankind, if such observations were really made. The sinusoidal nature of these processes, however, gives confidence that over time passions will subside and a mentally healthy atmosphere will come in the world.

While some are trying to calm themselves by comparing their symptoms with those of the most well-known diseases, while others are trying to diagnose others, we are trying to talk about complex conditions in the simplest and most understandable language.

Simple schizophrenia: not a rebel, but a sick person

Let’s start, perhaps, with the «youngest» form of schizophrenia, called simple in clinical psychiatry. Why young? Yes, because it is diagnosed mainly in adolescents and even children. This form is characterized by the absence or weak manifestations of productive symptoms and the rapid development of cognitive impairment. At such a young age, the development of the disease inevitably affects studies, any work, and indeed any productive activity. Adolescents focus exclusively on meeting their own needs, showing the following symptoms:

  • a rapid decrease in emotionality;
  • loss of intellectual productivity;
  • decreased interest in anything;
  • gloom, lack of initiative, lethargy, isolation.

Alas, adults often take the loss of connection between teenagers and loved ones, as well as the desire to leave home without good reason, as a manifestation of youthful maximalism and a rebellious character. Such indifference on their part often leads adolescents, deprived of purpose and interest in life due to illness, to the very social bottom.

paranoid schizophrenia

This type of schizophrenia is a cinematic classic: delusional states associated with persecution mania, extreme emotionality, suspicion, disconnected thinking … In general, a complete set. The brightness and realism of hallucinations is so great that the patient completely loses touch with reality. Manic and depressive replace each other in an endless kaleidoscope of emotions, logic and rationality simply do not have a place in the human mind.

As for the behavior of a person suffering from this form of schizophrenia, it is usually inadequate, aggressive, accompanied by imperative hallucinations. In this case, placing the patient in a hospital without his consent is a necessary measure.

It is worth noting that paranoid schizophrenia manifests itself already in adulthood and both women and men are equally susceptible to it.

Catatonic schizophrenia: when movement is not life

This form of schizophrenia is considered one of the most severe. It is good that today catatonia in its pure form is quite rare. However, it is worth knowing the main signs of this form of the disease:

  • Negative reaction to any external stimuli, extreme motor excitation, which the patient is unable to control and suppress.
  • Pendulum, stereotypically repetitive movements and an acute aggressive reaction to an attempt to stop it ..
  • Attacks characterized by catatonic stupor, during which the patient involuntarily freezes in a random position. In this state, the patient can be a few minutes, and sometimes the duration of the attack is up to several days!
  • Muscle tension reaches such a level that a person cannot not only move, but also speak, and even eat, he does not control the emptying processes at all, although he is conscious and understands what is happening around.
