Infections with Omicron have already been reported, according to the Secretary General of the WHO, in every country in the world. Experts say outright that this is a variant that can replace the currently raging Delta variant. What does an Omicron infection look like?

Currently, data on the symptoms of Omikron infection come mainly from doctors from African countries and Japan. Patients progressed gently, so far no cases of severe infection have been reported.

The analysis of the health status of patients infected with Omikron allowed to establish that among the typical symptoms, two symptoms characteristic of the Wuhan coronavirus, the Alpha or Delta variant were missing – patients did not lose their sense of smell or taste.

Each subsequent variant of the coronavirus produces slightly different symptoms in the event of an infection. The original Wuhan virus most often manifested a loss of smell and taste, the Alpha variant from Great Britain caused sore throat and muscles, the Delta variant caused gastrointestinal symptoms or symptoms typical of sinusitis.

In patients diagnosed with an infection with the Omikron variant, doctors noted symptoms characteristic of a common cold. These were mainly slightly elevated body temperature, sore throat, muscle pain and general weakness.

One symptom of infection is unusual for previous mutations – increased night sweats. Such a symptom was indicated by Dr. Unben Pillay, a family doctor in individual practice in Johannesburg (South Africa, South Africa).

According to some experts, the mild course of Omikron infection and the lack of (at least so far) deaths among patients is good news, meaning that COVID-19 may become another viral disease, such as flu or a cold. Others, however, argue that it is too early to draw such optimistic conclusions. It is not known how the virus will behave in larger populations or in people with comorbidities.
