Budesonide is an anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic substance. Its action is based on inhibiting inflammatory processes and reducing swelling and irritation. It partially reverses the changes that arise in the bronchial wall. Formoterol, the second base substance in Symbicort Turbohaler, works by stimulating the beta-2 type adrenergic receptors, which are found in the smooth muscle of the bronchi. Stimulating the receptors helps to relax the muscles and dilate the bronchial tubes, which improves or disappears breathlessness.
