Probably 10 million of our society struggle with varicose veins, which are manifested by pain, heaviness and throbbing, swelling. Most often, the ailment develops in women. If left untreated, deep vein inflammation, venous insufficiency, and even death due to venous embolism may be the consequence.
As long as the heart works efficiently with the support of the venous system and leg muscle contractions, the outflow of blood from the organs should run without reservations. However, as a result of the weakening of the function of the valves and the decrease in the tension in the walls of the venous vessels, blood stasis occurs. Sometimes the development of varicose veins is mediated by thrombosis-induced blockage of blood vessels or pressure on the veins.
Risk factors
The formation of varicose veins is also greatly influenced by:
- inheriting the tendency to develop varicose veins from the parents,
- advanced age (increases the likelihood),
- gender (women struggle with varicose veins more often),
- pregnancy,
- obesity,
- frequent lifting of heavy objects,
- tall,
- work in a standing or sitting position only,
- flat feet,
- heat,
- oral contraception,
- constipation.
