Sweet onions: varieties

Sweet onions are increasingly used by housewives in the kitchen, displacing spicy and semi-sweet onions. It is appreciated for its high taste and lack of tears when cutting. Used raw for salads and marinades. It is added to various dishes fried and boiled.

To date, many varieties of sweet onions have been bred by gardeners. They differ in the size of the bulbs, the method of planting, the time of collection and storage, and the yield. Bulbs of some varieties reach up to 1 kg. The plant is planted with sowing or seeds.

Sweet onions have a turnip shape

It has become unprofitable to grow ordinary onions, it is less productive and is not in demand in the market. Favorite varieties of gardeners are:

  • Exibishen is one of the best varieties. The bulbs are gigantic, reaching 1 kg. Bred in Holland.
  • “Ermak” is characterized by early maturity, grown from seeds or seedlings (gives a higher yield).
  • “Stuttgarter Riesen” bred in Germany, grown from seeds. Ripens in 4 months.
  • Globo is a late ripening variety, resistant to diseases.
  • Orion is prized for its early maturity, which allows it to be grown in cold climates. Gives a good harvest – bulbs are large, stored until spring.

In addition to varieties, many hybrids have been bred, distinguished by high yield, taste and disease resistance.

How to grow sweet onions?

Growing sweet onions is no different from growing other varieties. To achieve high yields, it is important to follow a number of rules:

  1. Plant onions in a place where there is a lot of sun. In the shade, it stretches out and is only suitable for greenery.
  2. Fertilize the soil well before planting, and feed it with mineral fertilizers several times during the summer. Onions respond well to organic matter and ash.
  3. Soak the sevok and seeds in a weak solution of potassium permanganate, then dry and plant in the ground.
  4. Remove weeds and loosen the soil throughout the season.

Moisten the beds regularly. For this, you can use drip irrigation.

You need to store the set at a temperature not lower than 22 degrees. If this is not possible, in the spring it must be spread in a warm place and dried well, otherwise the onion will go into the arrow

In places with cold climates, onions are planted with seedlings, seeds are sown in pots in February-March. In the southern regions, seeds are sown directly into the ground in early spring, as soon as there is an opportunity to go to the site. The sevok is planted later, as the short daylight hours can cause the arrows to be thrown out.
