The country’s chief epidemiologist said Sweden was seeing a decline in new coronavirus cases, but the situation varies by region. 170 cases of coronavirus have been confirmed in the last XNUMX hours; it is one of the smallest daily gains since spring.
“The recent increase in new infections in young people now seems to be in decline,” Tegnell stressed at a press conference, adding that «Sweden is at a different point in the development of the pandemic than (the rest of) Europe” – He said.
The region where there has been a significant increase in new infections is Skania, where 94 people were diagnosed with coronavirus infection during the last XNUMX hours. On the other hand, the situation in Stockholm, one of the most affected cities in Europe, has improved significantly. According to Tegnell, this was partly due to the city’s acquisition of antibodies.
Across Sweden, one person died of COVID-19 on Tuesday, the total death toll is 5814. The positive trend continues in intensive care units, where 26 patients stay due to infection – seven fewer than a week ago. So far, the coronavirus has been confirmed in 86 people in the country.
On Tuesday, the Public Health Office announced that it had discovered irregularities in carrying out tests for the presence of coronavirus. For this reason, 3,7 thousand people were misinformed about its positive result. These people are currently being searched for, and the statistics of new cases from recent weeks will also be improved.
As Karin Tegmark Wisell, head of the microbiology department of this office explained to the media, the so-called quick tests imported from China with CE certificate. The defect was discovered as a result of random quality control.
Due to the improvement in the epidemic situation in Sweden, restrictions related to the organization of mass events are to be liberalized soon. The authorities want to allow gatherings of more than 50 people in the case of seats, provided that the organizer meets a number of recommendations. Details are being developed, will be announced next week. It is possible that visits to nursing homes will also be reintroduced.
Sweden’s strategy to combat the coronavirus is only to follow recommendations, and the only serious restriction is the ban on public gatherings of more than 50 people, which is still in force. The Swedish authorities decided not to close the country in the spring. So far, despite discussions, the use of masks is not recommended.
