Highest COVID-19 incidence per 100 in Western Europe inhabitants, already amounting to 600, is recorded in Sweden – writes the daily “Svenska Dagbladet” on Thursday. On that day, the government decided to resume secondary education.
According to the Swedish newspaper, which cites data from the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control, in Europe the number of COVID-19 infections per capita is currently higher only in Serbia, Hungary, Estonia and the Czech Republic. At the same time – as the author of the article notes – the statistics of deaths from the coronavirus are less gloomy.
- Did a controversial strategy make sense? «Sweden is positive»
In early March, Sweden had 32 deaths per million inhabitants, while the European average was 51. According to Sweden’s chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell, the lower number of deaths “is likely to be related to the immunization of nursing home residents”.
The high rate of COVID-19 infections and the growing number of patients in intensive care units (291 patients, an increase of 27 within a week) have not led to radical restrictions by the authorities. Tegnell said Tuesday the new restrictions are not planned for the Easter holiday.
On Thursday, the Minister of Education Anna Ekstroem announced the decision to resume full-time education in secondary schools. “School is a place of high social importance, and each day of physical presence is important” – she explained. At the same time, she expressed the hope that the return of the students would not result in a sanitary relaxation. “We will encourage outdoor lessons,” she added.

Swedish Radio political commentator Tomas Ramberg described the decision to return students to school as “surprising”. “This is a bold step, given the pandemic situation and the lack of human compliance,” says Ramberg.
The Swedish authorities, which did not decide to close the society during the first wave of the epidemic in 2020, introduced the first radical restrictions in January this year. It was forbidden to sell alcohol in gastronomic establishments after 20, and the number of people who can stay in stores has been significantly reduced. At borders, a negative COVID-19 test is required from travelers. After a year of discussion, the use of masks was recommended. The government has also prepared regulations enabling the closure of a business.
