On December 21, 2016, the UN General Assembly, by its Resolution No. 71/246, proclaimed Day of sustainable gastronomy (Sustainable Gastronomy Day). In 2017, it was held for the first time.
This decision was dictated by the fact that gastronomy is an important element of the cultural expression of any people, associated with the natural and cultural diversity of the world. And also that all cultures and civilizations can contribute to sustainable development and play a critical role in achieving it, as they contribute to sustainable development through a culture of food and gastronomy.
The goal of the Day is to focus the attention of the world community on the role that sustainable gastronomy can play in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, including by accelerating agricultural development, increasing food security, improving human nutrition, ensuring sustainable food production and preserving biodiversity.
The decision was also based on the resolution “Transforming our world: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”, in which the General Assembly approved in 2015 a comprehensive set of universal and transformative goals and objectives in the field of sustainable development, which, in particular are aimed at eradicating poverty, protecting the planet and ensuring a decent life.
And with the United Nations declaring 2017 as the Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development, all World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) initiatives aim to promote food tourism in a sustainable manner, including addressing poverty alleviation, resource efficiency, environmental protection and change. climate and protection of cultural heritage, cultural values and diversity.
Sustainable development includes such an important element as the production and consumption of food. This applies to all those involved in the food tourism chain of employment. This means that public and private institutions, manufacturers, tour operators must promote the consumption of sustainable food and establish links with local suppliers.
On this Day, the UN invites all Member States, organizations of the United Nations system, other international and regional organizations, and representatives of civil society, including non-governmental organizations and individuals, to actively celebrate Sustainable Gastronomy Day in accordance with national priorities.
