Supremin is a medicine available in the form of a syrup. This syrup has an antitussive effect. The indication for its use is dry or acute cough. Supremin is intended for use by adults and children from 2 years of age. The syrup makes you cough less often and the cough itself is less intense.
Supremin – action
The active substance of Supremin syrup is butamirate citrate. It is a cough medicine that has a different biochemical structure and a different pharmacological effect than opioid alkaloids. This substance acts centrally, but its exact mechanism of action is not known.
The syrup has a non-specific anticholinergic effect, and additionally dilates the bronchial tubes, making it easier to breathe. Importantly, Supremin is not addictive and does not lead to habituation. It is so well tolerated that small children can also take it.
Supremin auxiliary substances are aspartame, benzoic acid, methyl parahydroxybenzoate and liquid maltitol.
Supremin – indications
The indication for the use of Supremin is the alleviation of acute, dry cough.
Supremin – contraindications
Even if the patient has indications for the administration of Supremin, it cannot always be used. The main contraindication to the use of the syrup is hypersensitivity, i.e. allergy to any component of Supremin. The syrup should also not be used by people suffering from phenylketonuria.

Supremin – precautions
There are diseases and other circumstances that may make the use of Supremin impossible, or may require a dose adjustment. You may also need check-ups. The precautions apply to:
- people with symptoms of severe respiratory depression;
- simultaneous use of expectorants that may lead to the retention of secretions in the respiratory tract (Supremin stops the cough reflex) – this increases the risk of e.g. respiratory tract infection;
- use of the drug for more than a few days – consult your doctor;
- people with phenylketonuria, because Supremin contains aspartame which is a source of phenylalanine;
- people with diabetes, with hereditary fructose intolerance – Supremin contains liquid maltitol;
- allergic reactions due to the content of benzoic acid and methyl parahydroxybenzoate;
- driving vehicles and operating machinery or performing other activities related to attention and concentration – the drug may make you feel sleepy.

Supremin – dosage
Supremin is a syrup intended for oral use. The drug should be used as directed and the recommended doses should not be exceeded, as this will not increase the effectiveness of the drug and may harm your health. Please consult your doctor if you have any doubts.
Dosage of Supremin:
- children – the most common syrup is administered 3 times a day – children from 2 to 6 years of age 5 ml, children from 6 to 9 years of age 10 ml, and children over 9 years of chewing 15 ml;
- adults – use 15 ml of syrup 4 times a day.
Supremin – pregnancy and breastfeeding
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, do not use any medication without consulting your doctor. It is very important to clarify any doubts about the risks and benefits of using Supremin.
According to the manufacturer’s recommendations Supremin should not be used in the first trimester of pregnancyHowever, in the second and third trimesters, you can use the syrup only after consulting a doctor and only in a situation of absolute necessity, on the explicit recommendation of the doctor.

Supremin – interactions
Before starting to use Supremin syrup, inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including those available without a prescription. Especially, you should inform your doctor about the drugs mentioned above, which may require dose adjustment or discontinuation.
Remember not to combine Supremin with expectorants. These can cause mucus to build up in the airways, increasing the risk of bronchospasm and respiratory infections.
Supremin – side effects
Supremin, like any other drug, may have some side effects. However, keep in mind that most often the benefits outweigh any possible side effects. It uncommonly occurs:
- rash;
- nausea;
- diarrhea;
- dizziness.
Symptoms of Supremin’s side effects they are most often reversible with treatment and are unlikely to require dose adjustment. However, if the symptoms of allergic reactions or gastrointestinal problems do not disappear, Supremin should be discontinued.
