Sunflower varieties: description and characteristics
Sunflower is a healthy and fertile oilseed crop grown in many countries, including Russia. Depending on the variety of sunflower, it can be used to obtain vegetable oil or for the preparation of confectionery.
Description of sunflower varieties suitable for oil production
In nature, there are a large number of sunflower species and its hybrids. They can be classified according to different characteristics and properties.
All sunflower varieties prefer warm climates and fertile soil
You can get high-quality vegetable oil from the following types:
- Albatross is a plant that grows up to 2 m. This variety is characterized by high oil content, resistance to droughts, diseases and pests;
- “Buzuluk” reaches 170 cm in height. It has good yields regardless of growing conditions;
- “Flagman” is a high-yielding sunflower about 210 cm high. Its seeds are large and tasty.
These varieties, like most other species, have bulky inflorescences with a convex disc and a well-developed root system that is located deep in the ground.
The best results in the form of a healthy plant and a large number of seeds can be obtained by growing sunflowers in fertile soil.
Characteristics of sunflower varieties for confectionery purposes
Among the variety of sunflower varieties, some of its species are grown exclusively for use in confectionery purposes. These varieties include:
- “Almaz”, which grows up to 260 cm in height and has large grains about 2 cm long. Given their pleasant taste, the seeds are fried and added to confectionery;
- “Lakomka” is widespread in Moldova and Ukraine, as well as in the southern regions of Russia. The seeds are thin, sweet in taste, have a spicy aroma, they are added to cakes and baked goods as a nut additive. In addition, the seeds have a long shelf life;
- “Giant” is characterized by a powerful stem, large inflorescence and large leaves. Its fruits can be used not only for making treats, but also added to a variety of dishes.
There are other varieties of sunflower that are not used to make vegetable oil.
Sunflower has many other qualities and properties, it can also be used as a honey plant, medicinal or ornamental plant.
Thus, sunflower is a crop that can be used in many areas, if you choose the right variety.
