Summer with benefits: games for children that develop speech

In summer, children move a lot, play in the fresh air, and gain vitamins. But parents naturally have a question: what to do with the child in order to consolidate the skills acquired with the teacher and return to classes from the beginning of September without losing the accumulated baggage of knowledge? Our experts, speech therapists, shared exercises and games that will help develop speech in a child.

It is no secret that the key to success in developing many skills, including speech, is the regularity and systematicity of classes. It is especially important during the summer period, the period of rest from the main classes with the teacher, to independently work out exercises at home aimed at increasing vocabulary, correct pronunciation of words and building grammatical structures. So that classes do not tire, you just need to correctly dose them and choose a game form.

Expanding vocabulary

If the child has just begun to learn words (most likely nouns), help him with this. Suggest the names of new items, look at pictures in books and say their names aloud. Ask simple questions: “Who is this?”, “Where is the cat / Katya / house / nanny?” Help with an answer. At this stage, give preference to simple and short words, as well as the most specific sentences.

When there are already a lot of words in stock, but still not enough, continue to enrich the vocabulary with other parts of speech in the format of simple games. For example, you can praise your favorite toy, competing to come up with more words for this (we enrich the dictionary of signs). You can arrange comic competitions between toys, which of them can do more (we enrich the dictionary of actions). You can play hide and seek with a toy and voice where the toy hid and where it came from (we enrich the vocabulary of prepositions).

The most common mistakes occur when using prepositional-case constructions

A game of riddles is very interesting when you need to guess or find the object that is being talked about. You can guess by signs, and by actions, and by location. The well-known yes-no game is also good, when one of the participants asks questions about a conceived or hidden object, and the second answers only “yes” or “no”.

Learning grammar

As a rule, the most common mistakes in children’s speech occur when using prepositional-case constructions. To train the competent use of these structures, the game “Foreigner” is suitable. In fact, this is the restoration of a deformed phrase, where the words are given in their original form. We tell the child: “An elephant came to us (any toy can play this role). He is a foreigner and does not speak Russian very well. Help me understand him, translate his words. And we report what the elephant said. For example: “The elephant wants strawberries.” The child corrects: “The elephant wants strawberries.” This game can be made more difficult by saying the words in the wrong order: “Mom put the cup on the table.”

In all games for the development of grammar, special attention should be paid to pronouncing the endings of words, highlighting them with a voice and drawing the child’s attention to them.

Learning to tell

In this matter, not so much speech games as exercises will help us, because the ability to tell is, first of all, the ability to build a sequence. Try, for example, to do something following the instructions of the child: build a house out of cubes, draw, sculpt, cook a salad – the imagination is not limited. Condition: the child is a commander. He tells where to start, how to continue, sees the result, notices the successes and shortcomings of his instructions, learns to correct them, that is, to use coherent speech.

Try to retell familiar fairy tales and short stories together. Very good for this work by V. Suteev. They are colorfully and clearly illustrated, accessible and interesting in content. The pictures in them serve as reference points for retelling.

Time spent together will surely bring results.

Another game that develops speech memory well is Magic Chain. The first player says a sentence of two words – the basis. Then the players take turns spreading this base, adding new words to it in an arbitrary place. It is important not to stray, to correctly repeat what has already been said, adding something of your own. For example: “It’s raining.” “It’s raining heavily.” “It’s raining heavily today.” “It has been raining heavily all day today.” “It’s been raining hard, cold all day today.” The loser is the one who missed a word or did not find what to add.

Learning to “pronounce”

Here we will not do without the physical preparation of the muscles of the articulatory apparatus. Of course, articulatory gymnastics should not be stopped during the holidays. In addition, you should continue to automate the already delivered sounds, learning, for example, tongue twisters and competing in the speed of their pronunciation.

In order to make it easier for a child to pronounce words that are complex in structure, he should develop a sense of rhythm and the ability to memorize the sequence of syllables. To do this, you can repeat various rhythmic patterns with claps one after another, as well as play the game “Remember, repeat.” Rules of the game: the child must repeat after the adult 3, 4, 5 or more syllables or words strictly in the given sequence. To increase interest in the game, the child and the adult should change roles.

Of course, this is not a complete list of possible speech games and exercises with a child, but with regular inclusion of them in your communication, visible changes will not keep you waiting. Do not stop studying in the summer: the time spent together will definitely bring results!
