Summer hair care: what you didn’t know

How is hair care in summer different from regular procedures in other seasons? We will answer. And we will advise a few means for maintaining a beautiful hairstyle in hot weather (yes, there is also a hat among them).

How do sun and water affect hair?

High temperatures, solar radiation, sea water, dry wind – in the summer, hair and its owners have many additional difficulties.

  • Ultraviolet rays destroy lipids and pigment (both natural and artificial), contribute to the loss of moisture.

  • Salt water damages proteins and makes the hair shaft porous.

  • Frequent washing, dyeing, curling, using hair dryers and irons only exacerbate the situation.

The result of exposure to the sun and sea water is dry, brittle, burnt, dull, damaged hair without volume, but with split ends.

To avoid such a sad ending, at the very beginning of summer, daily care should be adapted to the changed conditions.

Experts do not recommend dyeing and highlighting hair, as well as doing permanent straightening and waving on the eve of a trip to the sea.

What is the difference between summer shampoo

Sweat and dust in the air make us wash our hair more often in summer. It also contributes to dry hair. In the hot months, replace your regular shampoo with a milder, more gentle one.

And here’s what experts say about moisturizing ingredients in hair care formulas.

  • The composition should contain the following ingredients: keratin, silk proteins, aloe vera, coconut milk, mango and apricot butter.

  • Silicones like dimethicone and cyclodimethicone help lock in moisture, while peppermint essential oil adds a fresh feeling.

Ideally, choose a pair of “shampoo + conditioner” of the same brand – so their active ingredients will work in synergy, and the effect will become more noticeable.

What hair masks to choose for the summer

Weakened hair will not interfere with additional care, so summer is the time to use masks and balms. At least once a week, but 2-3 times is better. Products containing vitamins B, C, E, F, panthenol, wheat and almond proteins, chitosan are well restored.

If you need to dye your hair, visit the colorist no later than a week and a half before the vacation.

Give your hair a rest whenever possible, including from blow dryers, curling irons, flat irons, and heavy styling products like hairspray and foam. Give preference to natural styling and lightweight leave-in serums and sprays.

SPF hair protection

Hair care in the summer at sea is unthinkable without protection from the sun. Hats, scarves, turbans will not only protect you from sunstroke and ultraviolet radiation, but will also become a stylish accessory. Before sunbathing and swimming, apply special SPF products to your hair, and after that, be sure to rinse them from salt and chlorine.

Little secret. Replace your SPF spray with natural carrier oils: Apply a generous amount of almond, olive, grape or jojoba oil to your hair before the beach to help prevent dryness and give your hair a wet finish.
