Our eyes are exposed to numerous irritants every day. Depending on the season, we can observe various reasons for the redness of our eyes. In summer, it will be in air-conditioned rooms, in winter it will be very frosty, as well as dry air in our homes.
Spring is the time of allergies caused by grass and tree dust. In addition, blue light radiation from the screens of our TV sets, smartphones, tablets and monitors has a negative impact. Many people try to cope with home remedies, rinsing their eyes with saline solution or chamomile infusion. Often we feel dry eye as if sand has fallen there, sometimes it is a more serious disease – Sulfacetamidum can help.
When to use Sulfacetamidum?
If our eye problems: eyelid swelling, eye pain, the appearance of pus, reddening of the eyeball or tearing persist for several days, we should see a doctor as soon as possible, preferably an ophthalmologist. On the basis of an interview and a thorough examination, it will assess whether the problem with our eyesight is related to viral, fungal, bacterial infections, or if it is related to an allergy. If the doctor determines that we are dealing with viral conjunctivitis, we should remember that it can be contagious.
We should then follow the basic rules of hygiene, above all remember to wash our hands frequently. Women should avoid eye makeup during this time, as the virus may remain on cosmetics or paint brushes. Ladies should also avoid using their girlfriends’ cosmetics and accessories. If the infection is bacterial, the ophthalmologist should order an antibiogram and select an appropriate antibiotic. Sometimes, instead of an antibiotic, a drug with a bacteriostatic effect, such as, for example, Sulfacetamidum, is sufficient.
How to use Sulfacetamidum?
On the Internet, we can read numerous opinions on the use of Sulfacetamidum, but always before reaching for any medical preparation, we should consult a doctor or even a pharmacist in a pharmacy. Sulfacetamidum drops can be used in the case of inflammation of the conjunctiva and / or the cornea, eyelids or tear ducts. When it comes to taking the drug, the doctor will always select the appropriate dose for specific cases of disease. For adults and children over 1 year of age, it is most often 1-2 drops several times a day, for infants from 3 months of age – 1 drop every 1-3 hours. If we are struggling with purulent discharge, it should be removed before administering the drug, as it may impede its absorption. Drops are usually not administered at night.
Do not take the drug in case of hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients, as well as during pregnancy and breastfeeding, unless the doctor considers it absolutely necessary and in his opinion the expected benefits outweigh the risks.
If we have problems with our eyes and the doctor has recommended taking Sulfacetamidum, we should remember that it is used topically, externally and only for a short time. If we do not notice any improvement within a few days, we should go to a specialist to extend the diagnosis.
