Sugaring: let everything go smoothly

There are many ways to get rid of unwanted hair, but sugaring is one of the most popular. The whole truth about sugar depilation, its advantages and disadvantages is here, in the comments of our experts.

What is shugaring?

It is believed that this method of getting rid of unwanted hair came to us from the East, from Persia, so sugar hair removal is also called Persian. In Tunisia, sugaring is still part of the wedding ritual: to please her husband, girls remove hairs all over their bodies with sugar syrup. But after the wedding night, rarely anyone repeats this experience: despite the sweet name, this procedure is not pleasant.

In Russia, thousands of women know what shugaring is. Sugar paste removes hair in the armpits, bikini, legs, arms, buttocks. The classic recipe contains only water, sugar and lemon juice, so the procedure is often carried out at home. But if you do not own the sugaring technique, it is better to trust a professional in the salon.

After the procedure, it is very important to properly care for the skin. Our test will tell you which body care products are right for you.

Benefits of sugar depilation

  1. Sugaring at home is perhaps the most affordable type of depilation. Sugar paste is made from products that are always at hand.

  2. The composition for shugaring does not contain artificial additives and dyes, it is suitable for any type of skin.

  3. Sugaring is a procedure with a good and long-lasting effect; after hair removal, the skin remains smooth for 10-20 days. How long does shugaring last after the first time? For 7-15 days.

  4. Hair is pulled out along the growth line, so after the procedure they grow very rarely.

  5. After the procedure, it is not necessary to remove the remnants of the paste with special means, it is well washed off with water.

  6. Having made a shugaring, you immediately see the effect. After 1-2 hours, redness will pass, and the skin will generally look great.

  7. If you do the procedure regularly, the hairs brighten and become thinner. And you can resort to shugaring less and less.

Among the disadvantages of the procedure is discomfort in the process.

According to dermatologist, cosmetologist, medical expert of the CeraVe brand Maya Goldobina, “since along with the removal of unwanted hair, intensive exfoliation of the stratum corneum of the skin occurs, this can lead to increased dryness and even irritation.” However, this can be corrected if you constantly use moisturizers.

Sugaring techniques

In order for the hairs to be pulled out by the root, and not to break, so that there is less discomfort, it is very important to follow the technique of performing the procedure. More precisely, techniques: shugaring can be done in different ways.

Manual (hand) technique

For classic shugaring, a medium-density paste is used. It is heated to 38-40 degrees, a small ball is rolled up and smeared with fingers against hair growth. Hands should be in gloves, because the heat of the skin melts the sugar mixture and spreads. After a few seconds, with a quick and sharp movement, remove the sticky strip in the direction of hair growth. In this case, the second hand pulls the skin in the opposite direction, so that there is less pain.

Spatula (bandage) method

Of all the types of shugaring, this is the most popular. You will need a soft paste – it is applied with a spatula, a plastic stack or even an ice cream stick. The frozen sugar strip is removed with the help of “bandages” – strips of paper, fabric or polymeric materials. The procedure is very fast – this is its main advantage. In addition, even small and thin hairs are captured during bandage depilation, so you don’t often have to do sugaring.

Application method

Before depilation, a very dense sugar paste is heated to 38-40 degrees, and after it becomes plastic, 2 to 6 applications are applied to different zones. The composition is kept for about a minute, and then the applications for hair growth are removed by hand. Beauticians say this method is ideal for the particularly sensitive bikini area, where coarse, dark hair grows and is difficult to remove painlessly.

How to prepare for sugaring?

Perhaps, you just need to understand if you have any contraindications to the procedure. Sugaring is not recommended if you have:
  • diabetes;

  • problems with veins in the legs;

  • cardiovascular diseases;

  • ulcers or inflammation on the skin.

Do not do the procedure the day before and during menstruation: these days the sensitivity of the skin is exacerbated.

Shugaring procedure: main steps

Sugaring is performed in several stages.

Skin preparation

Before removing hairs, the skin must be properly cleaned and degreased. In salons, special lotions are used for this. Chlorhexidine can be used.

Paste application

Sugar paste is applied by hand or with a spatula against hair growth – we have described various techniques in detail above. There are no special “rules of shugaring” regulating this process.

Paste removal

Again, it all depends on the technique:

  • with application and manual, the frozen paste is removed by hand;

  • the bandage method assumes that it will be removed with bandages – strips of paper, fabric or polymeric materials.

In both cases, the sugar paste is removed in the direction of hair growth.

Cleansing the skin after the procedure

In the salon, the remnants of sugar paste are washed off with a special lotion, which also moisturizes the skin. At home, sugar can be washed off with plain water.

How to care for the skin after epilation with sugar paste?

Slight redness and mild discomfort are normal skin reactions to the procedure. But so that pimples, pustules, itching, peeling, pigmentation do not appear (we wrote in detail about possible “complications” after sugaring here), it is very important to properly care for the skin. Maya Goldobina advises to use cosmetics with ceramides, cholesterol, hyaluronic acid. These components contribute to the restoration of the hydrolipidic film, moisturize and strengthen the skin. You most likely will not find funds “specially after shugaring”, so focus on soothing, moisturizing and regenerating creams. Below is a list of those that our editors like.

Moisturizing lotion, CeraVe

Light and non-greasy, it does an excellent job of moisturizing the skin and strengthening its protective barrier. The “workhorses” in the composition are just ceramides, cholesterol and hyaluronic acid.

Moisturizing cream for face and body, CeraVe

Hyaluronic acid in its composition saturates the skin with moisture, and ceramides effectively keep it inside the cells. The cream is designed for dry and very dry skin of the face and body, you can try it after shugaring.

Hydra Zen Soothing Face Cream, SPF 15, Lancôme

Suitable for all skin types, including sensitive. Significantly soothes the skin, gives comfort, makes it smooth and radiant, moisturizes.

Multi-restorative spray for children and adults Cicaplast B5, La Roche-Posay

Instantly soothes the skin, accelerates the process of its recovery, enhances the natural defense mechanisms. The main roles are madecassoside (this substance is obtained from the extract of Asian centella), panthenol and La Roche-Posay thermal water.

Moisturizing body milk Lait Corporel, Biotherm

Nourishing oils combined with glycerin restore the skin’s natural level of hydration and elasticity. Vitamin E provides antioxidant protection, while Thermal Plankton Extract promotes recovery.

Intensively regenerating body milk Nutrix Royal Body, Lancôme

His composition is really luxurious. Hazelnut proteins moisturize and soothe the skin, making it soft and tender. Royal jelly has a general tonic effect. Shea butter provides skin restoration, and beeswax perfectly softens the skin and prevents peeling.

What can not be done after shugaring?

Now, on the contrary, about what can not be done after shugaring.
  • 3-5 days to visit a bath, sauna or pool;

  • 1-2 days to play sports;

  • 1-2 days to wear tight clothing that will rub the skin;

  • spend time in the open sun without a product with a high level of SPF (pigmentation may appear on exposed areas of the body).

How often do you need to do sugaring?

The procedure is repeated as needed, that is, as the hair grows back. On average, once every 3 weeks. Important! It makes no sense to carry out the procedure until the hairs have grown sufficiently (up to 5 mm), they will simply be poorly captured.

So that the hairs do not break, and there is less discomfort, it is important to follow the technique of the procedure.
