Subclinical hypothyroidism is nothing more than latent, mild hypothyroidism, which is characterized by a slightly higher concentration of TSH and normal FT4. This makes it difficult to recognize. This condition occurs in the range of 3-8 percent. population. The consequence of mild hypothyroidism may be transition to overt hypothyroidism.

Subclinical hypothyroidism – diagnosis

To do this, blood tests are needed to determine the concentration level:

  1. TSH (thyrotropic) hormone,
  2. FT4 (tyroksyny) i FT3 (trijodotyroniny),
  3. anti-thyroglobulin and anti-peroxidase antibodies,
  4. cholesterol – it is elevated in most cases.

The level of TSH in mild hypothyroidism is above the upper limit of normal, but not greater than 10 mlU / L.

Do you want to perform a more detailed diagnosis for thyroid diseases and to differentiate them? Order the extended thyroid e-packet, which includes not only TSH, FT3 and FT4 tests, but also anti-TPO, anti-TG and P / cp measurement of TSH receptors.

During the diagnosis, in particular, the intake of certain medications, neuroleptics, lithium and iodine should be excluded.

Subclinical Hypothyroidism – Treatment

There are no clear-cut methods of treating subclinical hypothyroidism as there is no established TSH level at which to initiate drug therapy. The decision to use drugs is considered by the physician on a case-by-case basis. Not all mild hypothyroidism requires treatment, particularly where age-related risk of cardiovascular disease cannot be expected. Research indicates that slightly elevated TSH levels in people over 80 years of age may have an effect on prolonging life.

  1. It is he who controls the work of the thyroid gland. What should you know about TSH?

Finding yourself or someone close to the above-mentioned symptoms should not be immediately associated with latent hypothyroidism. Each case should be consulted with an endocrinologist. Similar symptoms, or even the same ones, can cause many other diseases, and often the result of an incorrect lifestyle – lack of physical activity and an unbalanced diet. It may turn out that the doctor, after examining the test results, will only recommend exercise and this will not mean underestimating the patient’s problems. It should be remembered that overdosing on drugs or taking them pointlessly may only lead to the disease.
