The sensations of pulling the lower back during pregnancy are familiar to almost all expectant mothers. Most often they are due to natural physiological reasons and do not cause concern. But such pains sometimes indicate different diseases, so you should pay attention to the accompanying symptoms.
Why does lower back pain appear at different stages of pregnancy?
First trimester. Doctors consider these sensations to be the first sign of conception. If the lower back is pulled in early pregnancy, usually at the 11th or 12th week, this is due to the relaxation of the joints of the hip and sacrum, which were previously immobile.
In addition, the effect of female hormones leads to a softening of the womb ligaments. All this is programmed by nature and cannot threaten future childbirth in any way.
Second trimester. The abdomen is gradually rounded, and the load on the spine increases. The woman’s posture changes. To maintain balance, she mechanically straightens her shoulders and stretches her neck forward. The center of gravity is thus shifted. In addition, the developing fetus requires more and more nutrients.

Last trimester. During this period, pain can be caused by false contractions. In this way, the body prepares for future childbirth. Unlike real contractions, such spasms occur irregularly and are short-lived.
Also, discomfort in the lumbar region can be caused by sudden movements, long motionless posture, uncomfortable shoes.
However, unpleasant sensations in the spine are not always explained by such harmless factors. Therefore, if the lower back strongly pulls during pregnancy, you need to consult a gynecologist, because this may indicate:
- miscarriage. In this case, the woman has pains not only in her lower back, but also in her stomach. In this case, a brownish-brown discharge appears.
- premature birth. The pain gradually spreads to the lower abdomen. It may be accompanied by too frequent urination.
- exacerbation of chronic diseases. This is how pyelonephritis or pancreatitis, osteochondrosis or sciatica can declare themselves. Their immediate treatment is required here.
- the occurrence of symphysitis. With this disease, the muscles of the bosom are overstretched. Symphysitis can cause various pathologies, for example, internal bleeding.
The most important thing in such situations is not to self-medicate. A timely visit to the antenatal clinic will help maintain the pregnancy and give birth to a healthy baby.
How to reduce back pain during pregnancy?
Trained muscles are less susceptible to soreness, so if you played sports, keep doing it further. You just need to reduce the intensity of your training. Pregnant women are shown swimming, water aerobics, walking. Exercises on fitball also help – this is a special gymnastic apparatus in the form of a ball.
It’s also worth revising your wardrobe. It should not have any tight belts, narrow corsets. Choose bras with wide straps. This will reduce the stress on the spine.
Get a bandage. He will solve 2 problems at once: keep good posture and help get rid of ugly stretch marks on the stomach.
Better to choose orthopedic shoes or at least orthopedic insoles
If you prefer ordinary shoes, it is advisable to postpone the stiletto heels until better times. The heel should be wide, no higher than 4 cm.
Treat yourself with care during this period: do not make sudden movements, eat more plant and dairy foods, and rest more often. And then lower back pain will not remind of itself too often.
