Stroh (Stroh) – very strong “Austrian rum”

Stroh (sometimes in Russian-language sources the drink is incorrectly called stroh) is an Austrian brand of spiced liquors, produced by Stroh Austria GmbH. In 1832, Sebastian Stroh founded a winery in the Austrian city of Carinthia, specializing first in schnapps (brandy) and liqueurs. In 1857 his widow moved production to Klagenfurt. In 1900, the Stroh brand was awarded a gold medal at the international exhibition in Paris.

Austrian rum

Despite the fact that the most famous drink of the company is called “Shtro rum”, historically it has a very indirect relationship to real rum. In Austria-Hungary there were no tropical colonies, and, accordingly, sugar cane, from which real rum is made.

Instead of cane, sugar beets, dyes and fragrances were used, and diluted alcohol was taken as the basis. Such a drink was called “home rum” (Inländer Rum). Over time, from a miserable fake, rum Stroh turned into a respected and popular local specialty.

Today, Stroh rum, like real rum, is made from sugar cane processing by-products. 75% of products are exported to more than 40 countries, mainly to Germany, Scandinavia, South Africa, Benelux.

Types of Stroh

Classic product line:

  • Stroh 40%;
  • Stroh 60%;
  • Stroh 80%.

The number indicates the strength of the drink. Stroh 80% is forbidden to be transported by air.

Other liqueurs:

  • Stroh Jagertee (Shtro Yagerte). A 40-proof drink based on “homemade rum”, made according to the recipe of 1864. Alcohol is diluted with hot water in a ratio of 1:3 and drunk in winter or in the cold season. Liquor can also be added to tea or coffee.
  • Stroh Fire (Shtro Fire). A 20% drink based on a XNUMXth century recipe that was first lost but then restored. The main component of the composition is hot chili pepper.
  • Stroh Cream (Shtro Cream). A creamy liqueur with a strength of 15%, the drink is drunk both in its pure form with ice, and added to coffee or desserts.

How to drink rum Stroh

All three classic types are an essential attribute of Austrian cuisine. They are added to pastries, sauces, desserts, coffee. Strong fragrant rum can be drunk in its pure form, but it is better to dilute it with water (juice, cola, lemonade) to taste.

The drink has a characteristic floral aroma, and it is distinguished from its competitors by a recognizable flat bottle. This form was not chosen by chance – it is reminiscent of Prohibition in the United States, when rum was imported into the country illegally, hiding under clothes on the body. The orange label symbolizes that this alcohol is so strong that it can be set on fire.

How to distinguish a fake Stroh

Fragrant Austrian rum is so popular that fakes are often found on the market. The original can be distinguished by the following features:

  1. Slightly concave flat brown glass bottle.
  2. Shiny gold label with XNUMXD Stroh lettering and patterned background.
  3. Embossed Sebastian Stroh signature just below the neck.
  4. Black cap with gold trim.
