Strepsils is a popular medication for throat infections. There are several forms of the preparation, so it is worth getting acquainted with their composition and dosage. Is there a possibility of side effects? Can pregnant women take Strepsils? We discuss the recommended precautions for taking and also look at how much Strepsils costs.
Strepsils – how does it work?
Strepsils are most often in the form of lozenges or lozenges, but you can also purchase an oral spray. The drug is primarily antibacterial and antiviral, thanks to two active substances: 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, which are supposed to alleviate the symptoms of throat infections.

Strepsils is available in the pharmaceutical market in the following forms:
- Strepsils Throat Immuno with Vitamin C. – the composition of the drug, in addition to active substances, also includes excipients, which include levomenthol, orange essence, tartaric acid, propylene glycol, orange yellow (E110), cochineal red (E124), sucrose and glucose;
- Strepsils Intensive – the active substance is flurbiprofen, and the auxiliary substances are macrogol 300, potassium hydroxide, lemon flavor, levomenthol, sucrose syrup, glucose syrup, honey;
- Strepsils Intensive sugar free orange – the active substance is flurbiprofen, and the auxiliary substances are macrogol 300, potassium hydroxide, orange flavor, levomenthol, acesulfame potassium, liquid maltitol and isomalt;
- Strepsils Intensive Direct – similar to Strepsils Intensive and Strepsils Intensive without sugar, orange contains flurbiprofen, and also betadex, disodium phosphate dodecahydrate, citric acid monohydrate, methyl parahydroxybenzoate (E218), propyl parahydroxybenzoate (E216), sodium hydroxide, mint flavor, cherry flavor , 2,3-trimethyl-2-isopropylbutanamide, sodium saccharin, hydroxypropylbetadex, purified water;
- Strepsils Junior – the active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, and the auxiliary substances are strawberry essence, pink Anto P-WS (anthocyanin) (E163), sodium saccharin (E954), tartaric acid, liquid maltitol (E965) and isomalt;
- Strepsils orange with vitamin C. – the active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, and the excipients are ascorbic acid, sodium ascorbate, levomenthol, orange essence, tartaric acid, propylene glycol, sunset yellow (E110), cochineal red (E124), sucrose and glucose;
- Strawberry Strepsils without sugar – the active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, and the auxiliary substances are strawberry essence, Pink Anto P-WS (anthocyanin) (E 163), sodium saccharin (E 954), tartaric acid, liquid maltitol (E 965) and isomalt;
- Strepsils with menthol and eucalyptus – the active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, and the excipients are menthol, eucalyptus oil, tartaric acid, indigo carmine (E132), glucose syrup and sucrose syrup;
- Strepsils with honey and lemon – the active substances are 2,4-dichlorobenzyl alcohol and amylmetacresol, and the excipients are honey, peppermint oil, lemon oil (terpene free), tartaric acid, quinoline yellow (E104), glucose syrup and sucrose syrup.
Strepsils – when should it be used?
It is recommended to take Strepsilsu in case of throat infections and oral cavity inflammations. The composition of Strepsils Immuno for the throat with vitamin C also contains ascorbic acid, which supplements the need for vitamin in colds and flu. Taking Strepsil has no effect on driving or operating machinery.
How should you take Strepsils?
Strepsils should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor or on the information provided in the medicine leaflet. Regardless of the form of the preparation (except for the spray), adults and children over 6 years of age can suck 1 tablet every 2-3 hours. However, remember not to exceed the limit of 8 tablets a day.
If your sore throat does not improve within three days of starting treatment with Strepsil, please consult your doctor.
Strepsils – recommended precautions when taking
Special care should be taken when taking Strepsils, especially in the case of patients who are intolerant to certain sugars. In addition, the drug contains sunset yellow and cochineal red, which may cause increased allergic reactions.
Are there any contraindications for taking Strepsilsu?
The main contraindication to taking Strepsilsu is hypersensitivity to any of the active or excipients contained in the drug. You should also remember that Strepsils tablets should not be given to children under six years of age.

Strepsils – possible side effects
As with any drug, Strepsils may cause side effects, which include, in particular:
- Rash
- Abdominal pain,
- Nausea,
- Oral discomfort
- Irritation or soreness of the tongue.
Strepsils – can you take during pregnancy and lactation?
Due to insufficient data, a doctor should be consulted if a pregnant woman wishes to take Strepsils. This also applies to the lactation period, as Strepsils Immuno with vitamin C contains ascorbic acid which may pass into breast milk.
However, if a woman does not exceed the doses or doctor’s recommendations indicated in the leaflet, the risk to newborns and infants is minimal.
Strepsils – how should it be stored?
Strepsils should be kept out of the sight and reach of children and out of the sun’s rays. The maximum temperature in the room should be 25 degrees C.
After the expiry date, do not take the drug. However, it cannot be thrown into the trash or sewage drain – it is best to take expired drugs to the nearest pharmacy and ask about the possibility of their disposal.
Strepsils – price and availability of the drug
Strepsils is an over-the-counter medicine. Tablets or a spray can be purchased at any pharmacy or via the website. The price of Strepsil depends on the form of the drug.
For 36 Strepsilsu tablets with honey and lemon, we can pay about PLN 15, for 24 Strepsils Immuno tablets with vitamin C – about PLN 16, and for 24 Strepsils Intensive lozenges – about PLN 19.
