Strawberry shelf: variety description

Strawberry “Polka” is an excellent variety for growing in the middle lane. It is resistant to diseases, weather conditions and produces a large harvest. No wonder this Dutch hybrid is loved by gardeners: it meets most of the qualities desired for strawberries.

“Shelf”: description of the strawberry variety

Its bushes grow strongly, acquiring abundant greenery as it develops. The stems are tall and strong, capable of supporting a medium-sized berry. Conical fruits have an average weight of 14-20 g. They are smooth and glossy, bright red in color. At the beginning of fruiting, the berries are the largest. New fruits grow smaller and smaller each time.

Strawberries “Polka” are often grown commercially

The taste of the berries is pleasant, sweet and sour. The pulp is pink, uniform, has no cavity. There is a seal at the stalk, it is difficult to separate from it

The shelf is popular with summer residents and farmers, and this is no coincidence, because it has attractive qualities:

  • gives a bountiful harvest;
  • unpretentious to care and external factors;
  • can be grown for both personal and industrial purposes;
  • tolerates transportation well;
  • has resistance to many diseases.

It produces a harvest once a year, but this period is long relative to other varieties. Fruiting occurs in mid-summer, when the bulk of the other strawberries have already departed.

The “shelf” in the photo looks like a very large and beautiful strawberry, the fruits are even and shiny. But to achieve this result, you need to put in a little effort:

  • first you need to choose a suitable landing site. It should be light. The shelf likes direct sunlight, do not plant it in a shaded area;
  • this variety is unpretentious to the soil, but it will thank you for feeding with a generous and high-quality harvest. It is best to add compost or manure to the soil, preferably rotted;
  • the plant tolerates frost well, but subject to the presence of snow cover. If it is not there, you need to help to survive this difficult time – a shelter from sawdust or special material is required;
  • during flowering, regular watering is needed – once a week, loosening the soil and applying fertilizers;
  • this variety develops a large number of whiskers, so this is the main and easiest way to breed. Sowing seeds is a much more laborious task.

“Shelf” has good resistance to diseases, except for lesions of the root system. For the purpose of prevention, it is necessary to treat the plants with special preparations once a month. In general, it is a stable and versatile variety that, with minimal maintenance, gives a decent yield in quality and volume.
