Strawberry “Maxim”: grade

Strawberries “Maxim” are large-fruited varieties of Dutch selection. Bred at the beginning of the XXI century in the Netherlands. Our variety is known as “Gigantella Maxim”, although this is not entirely correct. All over the world this strawberry is called “Gigantella Maxi” or simply “Gigantella”.

Strawberry variety “Maxim”: description and features

Despite the confusion with the names, “Gigantella” is very popular among Russian gardeners and fully justifies its name. It forms tall, sturdy shrubs with many rosettes. In the first three years, it gives a lot of mustaches, but with age, their number drops noticeably.

If irregularly watered, then the strawberry “Maxim” forms a cavity inside

The first strawberries are always huge. With good care, they easily reach 90-120 grams, with mass collection they become somewhat smaller – 50-60 grams. The taste of giant strawberries is sweet, with a slight pineapple aftertaste. The berries are quite dense, bright red, shelf-stable and transportable.

The quality corresponding to the description can be obtained only with very high agricultural technology. With insufficient care, the plant is easily affected by strawberry mites and rot, and the berries become smaller. The bush itself grows, turning into an unremarkable garden strawberry.

The “Maxim” variety tolerates frosts well, but in the northern regions it is better to cover young plants for the winter with spruce branches and cover them with snow. In the spring, with early removal of the shelter, the plant may suffer from sunburn. With good care, Gigantella will delight you with huge and sweet berries every year.

Reviews of the strawberry “Maxim”

Many gardeners have grown “Maxim” strawberries on their plots, so there is a lot of information about it.

For example, from the Moscow region they write: “I started planting Gigantella back in 2001. Then planting material could only be obtained at experimental stations or institutes. But I really wanted to have such beauty. When I took my bushes, I was immediately warned that growing in one place cannot be longer than 5-6 years. When the first berries appeared, it really was a miracle. Huge, sweet, aromatic. Everyone was delighted. But after 3 years I gave up this variety. I live in the city, I visit my dacha, I have no time to look after. “

Strawberry yield “Maxim” with good agricultural technology is very high – up to 2 kg per bush

Review of Maxim strawberry from Pskov: “A variety of medium and late ripening. The bushes are huge. The first berries were about an apple, 120 grams each, then they went smaller – 40-50 grams. The berries were perfectly stored in the refrigerator – for a whole week. Freeze for the winter. I got it for a holiday, and they are as fresh. But caring for her … Well, I have my own house and a vegetable garden nearby. But after five years my “Maxim” was still grinded, and the taste was not the same. It is a pity, we will have to plant again. “

From the reviews it is clear that the Maxim strawberry is suitable for those who have enough free time and energy to nurture each bush. With proper care, she will thank you with wonderful berries. If this is not possible, it is better to choose simpler varieties.
