Description of the strawberry variety “Marmalade”
The photo shows the garden strawberry “Marmalade” – a variety bred in Italy. Her bushes are large, spreading, with a lot of whiskers and dark green leaves. The harvest begins to ripen in early June. The berries are juicy, dense and aromatic, weighing on average up to 30 grams.
Strawberries “Marmalade” can give a re-harvest in the summer. Therefore, some gardeners consider it to be repaired, although it is not.
With good care, up to 1 kilogram of berries are harvested from one bush. In the third year, fruiting decreases, strawberry bushes are transplanted to a new place.
For reproduction of “Marmalade” it is best to use young rosettes with roots that are formed on the antennae. It is advisable to cut flower stalks on bushes intended for growing antennae so that they do not waste energy on fruiting.
Biennial plants with well-developed roots can be propagated by dividing the bush. This is done in August or early September. When planting, the distance between the holes should be about 40 cm. From the separated seedlings, the peduncles and all the leaves are cut, leaving only a few central leaves. After planting, the soil is compacted and watered.
The variety “Marmelada” normally tolerates a lack of moisture; in rainy and cold weather, the taste of berries deteriorates. But during a drought, the plants must be constantly watered so as not to lose the crop.
After each watering, it is necessary to loosen the soil between the rows. Mulching beds with strawberries helps to significantly increase the amount of harvest. In the first year of cultivation, it is recommended to remove all mustache and flower stalks on the bushes so that they gain strength.
Since the variety does not tolerate frosts well, for the winter, strawberry beds are covered with spruce branches, straw or needles. It is advisable to do this in October before the onset of cold weather. More expensive, but more convenient to use agrofibre for shelter.
The variety “Marmalade” has become widespread among gardeners. If you take into account the characteristics of the variety and properly care for it, you can collect good harvests for sale or for homemade preparations.
