Strawberry Jolie

The favorite of recent seasons has become a strawberry variety bred in Italy – Jolie. Appearing ten years ago, this variety has not become very widespread and has not gained incredible popularity, but Jolie really deserves attention. This garden strawberry was developed as a productive variety with beautiful and even berries, the best fit for the market. Jolie has a lot of advantages, for which she is loved and appreciated not only by private summer residents and gardeners, but also by owners of large farms. Strawberries also have some disadvantages, which are better to know about even before buying and planting seedlings.

A detailed description of the Jolie strawberry variety, photos and reviews of those who have already planted it on their own plots can be found below. Here we will talk about the recommended planting of this garden strawberry and the care necessary for it.

Characteristic features of strawberry Joly

Scientists from the Italian nursery began working on a new strawberry variety back in 2004. After a series of trials and tests, the new variety was named Jolie and was presented as a variety with medium maturation, high yields and large beautiful berries.

Attention! Initially, Jolie was developed for large industrial farms growing strawberries in order to sell fresh berries. However, today this variety is actively used by medium-sized, small farms, it is known and loved by ordinary gardeners and summer residents.

Strawberry Jolie

The “parents” of the new strawberries are Clery and Darselect, although only some genes are similar in these species. Jolie belongs to non-repairable varieties, but pleases with long-term fruiting – for three weeks new berries ripen on the bushes, the sizes of which practically do not change.

Description of the Jolie strawberry variety:

  • strawberries with medium ripening dates – they begin to sing berries in early June (a few days later than the related Clery variety);
  • bushes outwardly very similar to Clery, they are sprawling and tall;
  • leaves on strawberries are large, glossy, slightly down;
  • bushes are well leafy;
  • peduncles are located below the level of the leaves, they are quite powerful and large;
  • bushes throw out mustaches, with which Jolie’s strawberries propagate;
  • the root system of strawberries is powerful, well developed, so the variety is survivable, seedlings quickly take root after planting in the ground;
  • berries are large, have the shape of a regular cone;
  • the size of the fruits is almost the same, they weigh about 20-35 grams;
  • by the end of fruiting, the size of the berries is somewhat smaller, but not significant;
  • strawberries are red in color, have a glossy surface with clearly visible yellow seeds;
  • the neck of the berries is practically absent; at the stage of technical maturity, the tip of the fruit may be white or greenish;
  • in full maturity, the berries are painted in a uniform rich red color;
  • the pulp of strawberries Jolie is homogeneous, without cavities, juicy and dense at the same time;
  • strawberries taste sweet, with a slight sourness, there is a very pleasant aroma;
  • the taste qualities of Jolie are highly valued, the variety is considered dessert;
  • the variety is suitable for transportation and short-term storage – the berries do not “drain” and do not crumple;
  • the variety is resistant to diseases of the leaf plate and to root rot;
  • the yield of the variety is quite high – at the level of 800-900 grams from each bush.

Important! The productivity of the Jolie variety, of course, varies depending on the conditions and region of cultivation, but strawberries always produce a stable crop of quality berries.

Advantages and disadvantages

Probably, any variety or hybrid has both strengths and weaknesses. So strawberries Jolie distinguish their pros and cons, although gardeners’ reviews of the variety are mostly positive.

Strawberry Jolie

So, The Jolie variety has the following advantages:

  • multifaceted and very pleasant taste of berries, which is considered one of the best among the varieties of Italian selection;
  • the shape and size of the berries – strawberries are even, rather large, beautiful, regular conical shape;
  • good transportability – the berries do not crumple, do not flow, withstand long-term transportation and storage;
  • immunity to rot and fungal infections of leaves;
  • drought resistance allows you to grow strawberries even in the southern regions, and in the central part of the country, Jolie feels great at all;
  • unpretentiousness to growing conditions and to the composition of the soil (on poor soils, Jolie requires only more frequent and plentiful top dressing);
  • the variety does not need complex agricultural technology – strawberries need standard care;
  • winter hardiness allows you to safely grow Italian strawberries in the winter.

Strawberry Jolie

Attention! The average yield of the Jolie variety cannot be called a disadvantage (when compared with other foreign sweet berry hybrids). The productivity of strawberries largely depends on the quantity and, most importantly, on the quality of dressings, that is, it is important what fertilizer the gardener uses (humus, nitroammophoska, saltpeter or modern special complexes).

The disadvantages include the low location of flower stalks, as a result of which the berries often come into contact with the soil. However, the Jolie variety is resistant to rot, which means that strawberries in this case are threatened only by insects and the unaesthetic appearance of berries stained with earth.

Growing rules

The Jolie strawberry variety is grown in the same way as other varieties of Italian or French selection. For strawberries, it is important to choose a suitable place in the garden: the site should be well lit by the sun, not blown by strong winds or drafts, contain soil with neutral acidity. It should also be remembered that the particular Jolie variety does not like too moist soil, so you should think about the drainage of the site.

Planting strawberries

From the time of planting young seedlings will depend on how soon the strawberries begin to bear fruit. If you plant Jolie in the spring, then this year she will not give a normal harvest – you can only count on a couple of flower stalks from each bush.

In order for strawberries to actively bear fruit in the next season, it is necessary to plant them in the summer, and as early as possible. If your own seedlings are grown from rooted whiskers, the planting time is set for the end of August or the beginning of September. The most important thing is that flower buds have time to form at strawberries before winter – then next summer it will be possible to harvest a full-fledged crop.

Advice! Purchased seedlings in cassettes are planted even earlier – in July or, as a last resort, in early August.

The site for planting strawberries is prepared in advance: humus or other fertilizers are scattered on the ground and the soil is dug up to a depth of at least 25 cm. After that, when the ground settles, you can make holes for seedlings.

Given the sprawling bushes of the Jolie variety, it is recommended to plant seedlings with an interval of 25-30 cm between plants. In total, no more than 4-5 strawberry bushes should be obtained per square meter of the site.

The seedlings are transferred to the holes along with an earthen clod, after which they are lightly sprinkled with dry earth and rammed. Finish the planting procedure with watering and laying the mulch layer. It is recommended to use peat, sawdust or straw as mulch.

Important! Growing Jolie strawberries in tunnels or under film shelters allows you to get earlier harvests.

How to care

Reviews about Jolie’s strawberries left by domestic gardeners allow us to develop a care plan for Our Country’s temperate climate. Caring for Italian strawberries is very simple, because it is extremely unpretentious:

  1. Feed the bushes with mineral complexes during flowering and fruit formation – in mid-spring. Without adequate nutrition or on poor soils, Jolie can lie in wait for a disease such as chlorosis. In autumn, it is allowed to use organic matter (humus, mullein, wood ash, bird droppings, etc.).

  2. The Jolie variety loves water, but excess moisture is dangerous for strawberries, so it is better to use drip irrigation systems. About ten liters of water will be needed per square meter of the site.
  3. In autumn, strawberries are not mowed, but dry or infected leaves are simply removed to prevent the spread of infection.
  4. In order for the yield of strawberries not to fall, it is necessary to remove the extra whiskers, since there are a lot of them. For reproduction, it is recommended to select the most productive uterine whiskers.
  5. Before frost, Jolie bushes must be covered with agrofiber or a layer of organic mulch. In early spring, the shelter is removed so that the flower buds do not bulge.
Advice! To protect strawberries from insects, it is better to use Bordeaux mixture, and various fungicides are effective against fungal infections.

Valentina Pavlovna
I saw strawberries of the Jolie variety on a neighboring plot, I liked the tall bushes with beautiful glossy berries. Seedlings were purchased in cassettes – it is very easy to transplant them to the site. Before planting, the ground was fertilized with humus, since our soil is poor. Strawberries began to bear fruit the following summer (I planted them last fall), however, there were very few berries. But a year later, we managed to collect about 800 grams from each bush. For me, the advantages of the variety were productivity, unpretentiousness to the composition of the soil and an attractive appearance of delicious berries. Of the minuses, I can note the dependence of the crop on the amount of top dressing and infection of the bushes with rot in a rainy summer. Despite everything, in three years with a mustache she multiplied her Jolie by about 3-4 times.

Conclusion

Photos of aligned evenly colored Jolie strawberries look like pictures from a gardener’s guide. Aesthetic appearance is not the only advantage of the variety, farmers note the average yield of strawberries, its unpretentiousness and great taste.

Strawberry Jolie

Jolie is ideal for medium and small farms; it can be successfully grown in summer cottages and private garden plots. But for industrial scale today there are more productive varieties of foreign and domestic selection.
