Strawberry Bereginya

It is hard to argue with love for strawberries – it is not for nothing that this berry is considered one of the most delicious and best-selling in the world. But caring for her is not the easiest – you can’t call her a berry for the lazy. But busy summer residents and gardeners burdened with a bunch of other worries dream of a variety that would at least be resistant to many troubles, and whose bushes could not be treated several times a season with various chemicals.

Perhaps one of the varieties that meet this requirement is the relatively recently bred Bereginya strawberry variety, reviews of which, along with a photo and description, can help you decide whether it is suitable for your specific conditions or not. This variety of strawberries has more than enough advantages, there are also disadvantages, so it is important to weigh the pros and cons and understand what exactly you want from strawberries in the first place.

Strawberry Bereginya

History of creation

Strawberry Bereginya owes its birth to a group of breeders led by S.D. Aitzhanova, working at the Kokinsky stronghold of the All-Union State Institute of Economics, functioning on the basis of the Bryansk Agricultural Academy. The parents of this variety were the famous Nightingale – also the fruit of the creation of S.D. Aitzhanova, known for its resistance to almost all the main misfortunes that haunt strawberries (frosts, winter thaws, diseases, pests), and Induka, a Dutch variety that can boast of its good harvests. Strawberry Bereginya successfully combined the main parental qualities, which aroused great interest among both amateur gardeners and professionals.

Comment! Bereginya was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Our Country after lengthy testing quite late, in 2012.

Strawberry Bereginya

It was zoned only in the Central Federal District, but this strawberry variety is grown with pleasure in the territory from the Krasnodar Territory to the Bryansk Region and even in the Urals and Siberia.

Variety description

Strawberry Bereginya belongs to the type of traditional strawberries of a short day, not remontant, that is, ripening only once per season.

The timing of flowering and ripening is rather late, the berries begin to ripen only from the end of June – in July.

Bushes of medium size have a semi-spreading shape and dense foliage. Mustaches of medium size with a pinkish hue are formed in significant quantities, so that problems with reproduction are not expected in this variety.

Medium-sized shiny leaves have a light green color, weak ribbing and medium wrinkling. They have a slight pubescence. The teeth of the leaves are wide, obtuse. Leaf petioles are medium in size, more pubescent than the leaves. Stipules are long, wide, green.

Medium in thickness, densely pubescent peduncles located at the level of the leaves. The flowers are white, untwisted, medium-sized, bisexual. Inflorescence many-flowered, compact.

Strawberry Bereginya

Bereginya strawberries are distinguished by rather high yields – on average, 350-400 grams of berries can be harvested from one bush. In the second year, the yield even increases and is about 600 grams per bush. For farmers, it will be interesting to estimate the yield per hectare, which ranges from 15 to 30 tons of berries. A large variation in indicators is determined by climatic factors and growing conditions.

Important! It is noteworthy that Beregini berries practically do not shrink during the ripening process, unlike many other strawberry varieties. In this respect, only the Tsaritsa variety can compare with it.

The variety is characterized by increased frost resistance, able not only to withstand frosty winters without special shelters, but even worse, thaws in the middle of winter. When, after almost positive temperatures, frosts come again. Since Beregini’s kidneys wake up late, she does not have time to wake up during thaws. Frost resistance is estimated by a freezing coefficient equal to 1-1,5.

Strawberry Bereginya is distinguished by the highest resistance to fungal leaf diseases from many domestic varieties. It also resists verticillium wilt and strawberry mites well.

In a wet summer, strawberries can be severely affected by gray rot, so the author of this variety herself recommends Bereginya strawberries for cultivation in southern regions, where gray rot is rare. In temperate latitudes, it is necessary to maintain a sufficient distance between the bushes to ensure their ventilation. It is also desirable to mulch plantings and aisles with special black agrofiber or straw.

Reviews of gardeners

Strawberry Bereginya

Gardeners leave mostly favorable reviews about this strawberry variety. Many people like both the external attractive appearance of berries, and their taste and aroma. Disease resistance allows you to reduce or even eliminate the number of treatments, which frees up both time and effort.

Boris, 49 years old, Orenburg region
I have been growing strawberries for many years. I heard a couple of years ago about a new variety of strawberries bred by Aitzhanova – Bereginya. She has, no matter what grade, a pearl. I decided to try how he will behave in my conditions. The variety is wonderful in many ways. It ripens quite late, at the very end of June – when almost all the strawberries have already departed, and the remontant varieties have not yet ripened. The berries are all one to one, quite decent in size, beautiful and, most importantly, the taste is really sweet. Although a slight sourness is also present, so that the berry does not seem cloying. The resistance to leaf diseases in the Bereginya variety is very good, and the tick is not interested in it, but there are problems with gray rot. Apparently, due to low peduncles, the blowing of berries is reduced. But I plant the bushes in two rows in a checkerboard pattern, keeping a distance of at least 35-40 cm between the plants, since there are a lot of leaves on the bushes and it is impossible to give them thickening. I leave 50-70 cm between the rows. I also have this berry for sale, and my grandchildren actively feast on it, and it remains for jamming and freezing for the winter.
Oleg, 52 years old Lipetsk region
In our market, people prefer light varieties of strawberries, and so that with gloss. The dark ones are somehow treated with suspicion. I tried to grow Bereginya, San Andreas and Linos a few years ago. Linosa looks good, but tasteless at all. San Andreas, when it’s light, it’s sour, and if it gets dark, it becomes sweeter – they don’t take it on the market anymore. And Bereginya showed herself well, resistant to ticks, and the berries are tasty and beautiful, but almost all of them rotted. Even phytosporin did not help. It may make sense to grow it for those who have absolutely no dampness on the site. Refused all these varieties.
Evgenia, 34 years old, Bashkortostan
Strawberry Bereginya has been living with me for more than a year. It is quite possible to grow it for high yields. The berries are very juicy, tasty and insanely fragrant. At the same time, they are excellent for transportation. Of course, there are also disadvantages. For example, something that ripens late. If there is not much space on the site, but you want to try strawberries early, then it is better to look at other varieties.
Elizabeth, 48 years old, Tula region
I really liked the Bereginya strawberry variety. Plants are very unpretentious in cultivation, they perfectly tolerate both heat and drought in summer and frost in winter. None of my 20 bushes disappeared in the winter, although I did not make any special shelters. Sores on the bushes and on the berries, I also did not particularly observe. Care is normal, as for all strawberries, and the yield is really good. Yes, and the berries are really tasty and fragrant, otherwise it happens that strawberries are beautiful in appearance, but no taste.

Conclusion

Strawberry Bereginya

Strawberry Bereginya will allow many gardeners to harvest sweet and juicy berries even in low-sunshine mid-latitudes of Our Country. With the initial observance of all the rules of planting and care, it will not require any extra effort and excessive care from you, but it will please you with a good harvest.
