Description of strawberry “Albion”
The Albion repair strawberry was bred in 2006 in California. A feature of the variety is long and abundant fruiting, the crop can be harvested four times a year.
With good care, one strawberry bush yields up to two kilograms of large tasty berries
The variety is resistant to disease and drought. Bushes grow vigorous, with juicy green leaves. Peduncles are strong, tall, berries are always clean. Strawberries planted in autumn begin to bear fruit next spring.
For planting seedlings in late April or early May, choose a sunny place in the garden, protected from the wind. The soil should be fertile, water permeable, with neutral acidity. The distance between the bushes is 40 cm, and between the rows – 60 cm. Strawberries give a lot of whiskers, but at the beginning of growing they need to be cut off so that the plants gain strength. Autumn planting of strawberries begins in August and ends in the first decade of September.
Frequent fruiting leads to rapid aging of plants – the berries become smaller, the amount of harvest decreases. Therefore, the bushes need to be renewed every 3 years.
Albion strawberries can be grown not only by the traditional method in the beds. It is planted in various containers – plastic containers and pots, and instead of soil, peat and mineral fertilizers are used. This variety grows well in a greenhouse. For planting, seeds and seedlings are used.
Strawberry care includes weeding. In order not to pull out weeds all summer, the beds can be covered with agrofibre, then only regular watering, feeding and removal of wilted leaves and shoots are required. Plants love moisture, but over-watering the berries can become tasteless.
The Albion strawberry variety requires fertilization throughout the warm season. Before planting seedlings, the soil is fertilized with well-rotted manure or compost. Complex fertilizers are added to the water for irrigation every two weeks.
The disadvantages of the variety include its thermophilicity. Strawberries bear fruit until the very frost and do not have time to prepare for winter. Therefore, at the end of October, it is covered with straw, foliage or covering material.
