Strabismus: when to have an operation?

Strabismus: when to have an operation?

Sometimes with late strabismus, correcting the visual defect and soliciting the failing eye is enough to remove the defect of parallelism of the two axes of the eyes. But very often, this is not the case and it is then up to the ophthalmologist to take care of it, surgically.

For early strabismus, in toddlers from nine months to two years old, he readily uses botulinum toxin by injecting it directly into the oculomotor muscles which causes them to relax and can avoid surgery.

If the deviation persists despite the injection of botulinum toxin or in a larger child (after two and a half years), surgery of the oculomotor muscles should be considered: it consists of relaxing the muscles that are a little too tight and strengthening those that are too relaxed. . Adjustable suture systems to be as precise as possible are finally reserved for the much larger child. Finally, the ophthalmologist can still intervene surgically in adulthood.
