With the onset of spring, I want to quickly get out of the house. In the fresh air you can not only relax, but also cook. It’s good when there is an open or closed summer kitchen in the yard, allowing you to do what you love. If you have not yet acquired such a building, you definitely need to correct the situation. We will try to help you deal with the drafting, planning, design and other nuances of arranging a summer kitchen.
What are summer kitchens
Conventionally, summer kitchens are divided into closed and open buildings. The first view is a complete building with walls, windows and doors. An open kitchen is nothing more than a shed or gazebo, where a stove, sink, table and other household items are installed under the roof. If desired, a combined summer kitchen is built in the yard. That is, it is combined with other buildings.
Let’s look at some interesting ideas:
- A summer kitchen with a gazebo is a common option for combining buildings in a summer cottage. The main advantage is the convenience of cooking outdoors. Usually, inexpensive finishing material and the same furniture are chosen for such a gazebo due to their frequent pollution. A table with chairs is placed under a canopy so that you can eat without leaving the kitchen. In a large gazebo, a summer kitchen with a barbecue can fit, you just have to install a chimney. To be able to continue cooking with the onset of cold weather, the gazebo is made closed.
- A terrace or veranda can be attached to the summer kitchen. There are many design options for such an architectural ensemble. The kitchen is erected as a full-fledged closed building, and with it, a veranda is placed on the same foundation. It adjoins the wall with the front door. But the terrace is being erected as a separate platform. Moreover, it can be placed not only at the front door, but also on the other side of the kitchen building or, in general, around the building. The veranda and terrace can be open or closed. You can make a transformer – open in summer and close in winter.
- A hozblok with a summer kitchen and a sauna is a very convenient country option. Two useful rooms are under the same roof and stand on a common foundation. Hozblok is often built on small plots due to space savings. In addition, this design takes less building materials.
- Now summer kitchens with barbecues are gaining popularity, and an even better solution is the construction of a stove. The design is very complex, requires a lot of investment, but effective. In the stove, you can organize a barbecue, smokehouse, barbecue, install a cauldron, even fashion a fireplace. If there is not enough money for such a building, you can install a portable barbecue, and fix a smoke hood above it.
- The garage attached to the summer kitchen is another option for a utility block. However, this combination of buildings is considered a fire hazard. For safety reasons, it is advisable to equip a small intermediate room between the kitchen and the garage. Let it be a pantry for spare parts or garden tools.
- A very practical combination of buildings is an outdoor shower with a kitchen. A small hozblok is convenient to use in the country. After cooking, a person gets the opportunity to quickly rinse, and immediately return to the kitchen at the table.
If you didn’t like any of the kitchen options, then you can just stop at a separate building.

What to consider when drafting a project
The summer kitchen is a capital building and requires a supply of communications. Before starting construction, it is necessary to draw up a project, taking into account all the important nuances:
- The design process starts with a drawing. In addition to the layout, the diagram indicates all the dimensions of the building. The area of the kitchen depends on the number of people who constantly visit it. Let’s say about 8 m is enough for a family of three2. If the kitchen under the same roof is located with another room, then the area is increased, taking into account the dimensions of the other building.
- The project indicates the type of kitchen: open or closed. In the second version, the drawing indicates the location of windows and doors. The design of walls and roofs is developed taking into account their insulation. If it is planned to use a summer building in winter, heating is provided when drawing up the project.
- The diagram must clearly indicate the supply of communications. A summer kitchen without electricity and running water is impractical. With the onset of darkness, the possibility of cooking disappears, and in order to wash a plate or get water, you will need to run into the house.
- When drawing up the project, fire safety is taken into account. Grill, barbecue, cooking stove are sources of open fire. The materials from which the walls of the building and their lining are made must be non-combustible.
- It is important to correctly determine the type of foundation. For a light wooden canopy, you can get by with a columnar base. If a capital brick building is being built with a stove inside, you will have to pour a strip foundation or use reinforced concrete slabs.
When all the important nuances are taken into account, you can think about the future interior of the summer kitchen, the arrangement of the adjacent territory and other trifles.
The nuances of arranging a summer kitchen
It is only the owner who decides how best to equip the summer kitchen for himself, or rather, the hostess. It is she who will have to stand for hours at the stove while cooking. What can be advised in this regard? Let’s start with an open veranda. It is nice to eat outdoors, but the sun or wind can become a hindrance. If the openings of the open veranda are hung with curtains that have served in the house, various pendants, ropes, then you get a good decor and protection.
The next question concerns the owner. If a gas stove is installed for cooking, then it is usually connected to a propane-butane cylinder. It is important to take care of security here. It is advisable to take the balloon outside the summer building. For it, you can make a beautiful box, decorate it with decorative elements, or weld a frame around it from rods, along which creepers will weave.
The interior design of the summer kitchen should be comfortable for the hostess. It is important to provide a lot of comfortable and durable shelves. They are useful for dishes and preservation. There is nothing to do without a sink in the kitchen. Do not buy expensive ceramics. You can get by with a budget stainless steel sink. Water is supplied to the sink from the water supply or a storage tank is installed. Sewerage is taken out by plastic pipes outside the kitchen. There will be a lot of dirty water, so you will have to equip a cesspool.
If the summer kitchen is part of a single complex with a dining room, shower, terrace and other buildings, the entire area is decorated with greenery. You can even enclose a place of rest with a hedge.
If the summer kitchen is supposed to be located under a canopy, then its floor and the surrounding area must be paved using the technology of paved areas. The flooring can also be boards, but only even, not wood cuts. A wooden floor is arranged in the kitchen, and a stone coating is laid out on the street.
As for the canopy, it is provided for in larger dimensions than for ordinary places of rest. It must completely cover the kitchen equipment from precipitation. It is better to make a roof for a canopy simple single-pitched or gable without sheathing gables. Moreover, the height of the building itself should not be more than that of a residential building. The summer kitchen looks perfect on the site, immersed below the level of the garden.
stove
The simplest stove for the summer kitchen in the village can be found outside the premises. Usually such a brick building consists of a small chimney and a cast-iron hob. Even the firebox is not always closed with a door. The disadvantage of this design is that it stands in the open. When it rains, cooking will not work. Plus, these stoves are fire hazard. Smoke with sparks scatters throughout the yard, which is very dangerous in dry, hot weather.
Difficult to build, but very convenient is the stove for the summer kitchen, installed right inside the room. The design is so multifunctional that it allows you to cook many delicious dishes.
The general arrangement of the furnace looks like this:
- The oven is surrounded by at least two brick walls. They are shown as #1 on the diagram. It is better if it will be three walls. They will completely cover the cooking area from the wind. However, there is one more thing to consider here. Deaf walls are placed on the side where the wind most often blows. This is envisaged even at the project development stage in order to correctly determine the location of the furnace in the room.
- The brick building has an impressive weight, so pouring a concrete base is required. Often, under the stove with the walls of the kitchen, instead of a strip foundation, they equip a platform. It is labeled #2 on the diagram. Old reinforced concrete slabs are ideal for work. First, according to the size of the building, they dig a recess on the bayonet of a shovel, pour a sand and gravel cushion, and put slabs on top. If there is no such material at home, then the site is simply poured out of concrete, but it must be reinforced. A concrete platform is made above the ground level by at least 100 mm.
- A red brick oven is placed on top of the finished site. It is indicated by the number 3. It is important to provide an approach from the side of the hob. In our example, it is marked with the number 4. The second side of the stove can be attached close to the wall.
- In the photo, the summer kitchen is shown with three blank walls, that is, a semi-open type. For such a design, the right wall can be laid out narrow so that it only closes the furnace from the wind. The roof on the fourth corner will be supported by a brick or metal support, indicated by the number 5.
In the presented scheme, a small space is provided between the back wall and the stove. It is labeled #8. Free space is suitable for storing metal tools, such as pokers, scoops, etc.
Design
There are a lot of options for designing a summer kitchen. It is better to give preference to a simple rustic or Scandinavian style. Looks good environment from natural materials. If there is a lot of space in the kitchen, and inside there are several areas for rest and work, they can be beautifully divided. The easiest way is to use different materials for paving each zone. Wood pairs well with tile or stone.
Summer kitchen can be given a modern style. A bar counter with high chairs will look beautiful. It is made one with a place for cooking or separated by lifting it to the podium. Here you can also play with the lighting. The area at the stove is made well lit, and soft lighting is organized at the bar counter with spotlights.
Choosing furniture
It is advisable to choose inexpensive furniture for the summer kitchen, and that it lends itself well to cleaning. For an open version of the building, a stationary version is suitable. That is, the furniture is laid out of brick, wooden or plastic seats are attached. The table top can be tiled. Such furniture is not afraid of dampness, grease, dirt, and will not be scattered across the floor by strong winds.
Alternatively, you can fuse old furniture from the house after buying a new one into the summer kitchen. In general, apart from a table and chairs, nothing else is required here. If there is free space, you can put a sofa and a couple of small bedside tables away from the stove.
