Stove, bed and table, which was important in Russian huts

The first thing that was installed in Russian huts was a stove. This is the most important piece of home decoration for our ancestors: they slept on it, washed and cooked in it, it heated the whole house with its warmth and served as a secluded place for the brownie, who was very revered in the old days.

Without which there was no Russian hut

You don’t have to be an interior designer to understand that the stove was considered the center of the house, so everything else was placed relative to it. Firstly, thanks to the stove, the hut was zoned into the female and male halves and the red corner. The place where the stove stood was considered the kingdom of the mistress of the house, there were shelves with kitchen utensils and dishes. Here women did needlework: darned, embroidered, spun. In this corner it was always beautiful, cozy and smelled delicious, as the stove baked pies, then cooked cabbage soup. There was even a saying in the old days: “Woman’s road – from the stove to the threshold.”

The male half of the house was considered a bed under the floor

The owner of the house rested there, as the stove kept warm for a long time.

The place where guests were received and treated was the upper room. She performed several functions at once, depending on the time of day. The upper room was a bedroom, living room and dining room, because an ordinary peasant house, as a rule, consisted of only one room. There was also a table around which there were wide benches built into the wall. If the family was large, then sometimes chairs were delivered for dinner, and at night they slept on the benches.

In the corner above the table there were icons and an icon lamp; this place in the house was called that – the red corner.

But decorating the hut was not accepted, although the hostesses put beautiful dishes, handmade boxes or carved chests on the floor on the shelves.

Interior of a Russian hut in a modern house

If there is a desire to stylize the decoration of the apartment semi-antique, then any housewife will be helped by kitchen utensils of that time, for example, a samovar, wicker baskets with earthenware or textiles made in patchwork technique and embroidered with national patterns in basic colors – red, yellow, white.

Lighting will also help to inspire antiquity: choose lamps in the form of candles and icon lamps, or use lampshades. The main difference between the interior of that time: all the furniture was made of wood, simple design and rough shape, which inspired the idea of the broad nature of our ancestors, their hospitality and acceptance of everyone and everything. Remember where the expression “in cramped quarters, but not offended” came from?

And today we want more space, and then we complain about the cold in the houses, loneliness in the soul and longing in the eyes.
