Onions are not only a real storehouse of vitamins, especially necessary for the body in the winter season in conditions of a shortage of fresh vegetables, but also an excellent addition to many dishes. But in order to be able to use it throughout the season, it is important to know how to properly store the onion.
Preparing onions for winter storage
Long-term storage of onions largely depends not only on where they are, but also on the state in which they were stored. First of all, this concerns the degree of moisture onion. Ideally, it is desirable not only to harvest in dry weather, but also to additionally dry each bulb. To do this, onions are laid out in one layer either in a special dryer for vegetables, or simply kept in the sun. The humidity of the atmosphere should not be too high, otherwise the onion will not dry out, which is why an electric dryer is preferable for preparing the crop for subsequent storage, but if there is a lot of it, then this is not very convenient. Whereas a small amount of onions can simply be put into the oven. It is especially convenient to do this in an electric oven equipped with a mode for drying vegetables.

How to store onions in an apartment
For proper storage of turnip onions, a variety of container options. If you don’t have a lot of onions, then a few kilograms can lie in the refrigerator for a long time in the vegetable drawer. But since onions are usually harvested in large quantities, they often prefer to choose either boxes or nets for storing vegetables, which in past times could easily be replaced with ordinary nylon stockings by home recipes. It is preferable to put onions in a box in one layer, so there is less chance that the lower tier will start to deteriorate. Also, onions can be woven into bundles and simply hung on the wall of the pantry, where the temperature is suitable for storing vegetables. By a similar principle, onions are hung in small nets or nylon stockings.
Regardless of the choice of storage space, the onion must be regularly inspected and the heads starting to deteriorate should be removed, if any. This will save the rest of the crop from rotting.
In what conditions is it correct to store onions at home
Any container for storing vegetables should be sufficiently ventilated to keep the onions fresh. But it is equally important to create appropriate temperature conditions for this. The storage room should have a positive temperature, but it should not be hotter than 20 degrees. If the room is too warm, the onions may start to grow and taste sluggish and similar to boiled ones, after which their further storage will become problematic. The ideal temperature for storing vegetables is within 15 degrees Celsius. Temperatures that are too cold are also not good.
