Stop, quietly: how to remove fluffy hair

No one likes to spend a lot of time styling, only to suddenly find that everything is out of control, and the hair looks like a dandelion. If you understand what we are talking about, read this article – in it we will tell you how to remove frizzy hair.

Why does hair get frizzy?

The culprit for most hair problems is dry hair. And it, in turn, is usually provoked by factors such as:

  • hair porosity (natural or acquired);

  • damage to strands by staining, chemical exposure, styling and drying with hot appliances;

  • in the case of curly hair – their special structure;

  • dry scalp that doesn’t produce enough sebum to oil and protect hair

  • improper care – for example, too aggressive or untimely cleansing, neglect of balms, masks and thermal protection.

Dry strands, devoid of natural protection, with a cuticle loosely attached to the hair shaft, react extremely sharply to environmental factors, and this can be both excessive dryness of the air and humidity.

High air humidity (for example, during rain) also creates conditions under which it is difficult for hair, especially porous, curly, to maintain styling: the strands absorb water particles, the hairs are knocked out of the total mass, and as a result we get the dandelion effect hated by many. And if there is a lot of hair, and they are also very curly, then the hair turns into an uncontrollable mass.

How to make your hair not fluffy, but smooth? We tell.

What to do at home so that the hair is not fluffy, but smooth

Says Garnier expert and creator Evgeny SedoyIn order to fight frizzy hair, you need to choose the right care.

“If your hair is frizzy after washing your hair, it means that your shampoo and conditioner do not have enough nutritional components, there is a lack of moisturizing effect, so I advise you to pay attention to the lines “for colored hair” or “for dry hair” – such products take care of hair with emphasis on hydration.

Carefully study the composition of the products, look for oils in the formula that have nourishing properties, retain moisture, smooth the surface of the hair and prevent fluffiness already at the stage of care.

Shampoos

Hot water is known to dry both hair and scalp, so wash your hair with warm water at a comfortable temperature and do it as needed (neither too often nor too infrequently).

How often do you need to wash your hair? Find out by answering our quiz.

When it comes to shampoo, choose formulas with moisturizing ingredients in a mild detergent base. If your hair is very dry and your scalp is sensitive, consider sulfate-free options.

Shampoo for hair Botanicals “Lavender. Hydrating Essence, L’Oréal Paris

Mild, sulfate-free formula enriched with coconut and soy oils helps hair retain moisture during cleansing.

Shampoo for hair Superfood “Aloe. Hydration, Garnier

Perfectly cleanses the scalp and moisturizes the strands thanks to aloe vera and coconut oil in the composition.

Shampoo-care 3-in-1 for hair Low Shampoo “Luxury 6 oils”, Elseve, L’Oréal Paris

If you don’t know how to get rid of frizzy frizzy hair, try washing your hair with this sulfate-free hair conditioner. The shampoo is saturated with oils, does not disturb the hair cuticle, seals in moisture, and, like a balm, gives smoothness and softness to the hair – but it does this already at the cleansing stage.

Conditioners and balms

If the conditioner / balm is not chosen correctly, it is quite difficult to tame frizzy hair, regardless of whether they are straight or curly, thick or thin. Everyone needs a conditioner. Its purpose is to close the scales of the cuticle, neutralizing the alkaline environment created by the shampoo.

If the conditioner formula contains oils and emollients, then it simultaneously softens and smoothes the strands. The product is applied in just a couple of minutes after you have washed off the shampoo. Our expert Yevgeny Sedoy recommends using a conditioner after using the mask (if it does not combine the functions of a mask and a balm).

Balm conditioner for very dry hair Fructis Superfood “Banana. Nutrition, Garnier

Perfectly softens and detangles hair, nourishing them along the entire length.

Nourishing conditioner for dry and damaged hair Olive Fruit Oil Nourishing Conditioner, Kiehl’s

Essential for hair that suffers from dryness as a result of damage. Nourishing olive and avocado oils help keep hair hydrated, less frizzy throughout the day, and look dignified.

Masks

It is problematic to get rid of frizzy hair without integrating a mask into your beauty routine, since it is the mask that provides intensive care, restoring the cuticle layer, helping to make dry and fluffy hair smooth, shiny and flowing. After applying the mask, the hair does not get tangled, it is easy to comb and style.

The main thing is that the mask has enough nutritious oils, and structural components – keratin, amino acids, proteins and, of course, the ubiquitous hydrants, will not interfere.

The mask should be used regularly, 1-2 times a week, applied only along the length, on wet hair, “combing” the strands with your fingers.

Express mask with a complex of prokeratin, reconstructing the surface of the hair, Vichy

It is applied in just two minutes – this time is enough to smooth the cuticle, add shine and prevent dryness.

You can’t go wrong if you include masks for colored hair in your care – they have a pronounced moisturizing effect. And this mask also protects the surface of the hair, which is very useful for curls that are very fluffy, reacting to changes in the external environment.

An excellent mask with an excellent nutritional composition – shea, macadamia, jojoba and almond oils will help the hair retain moisture, smooth the strands, make them obedient and more resistant to negative external influences. Can also be used as a leave-in treatment!

A nourishing mask with a fluid texture of milk softens, moisturizes, adds shine, makes curls less vulnerable.

Elseve Luxury Coconut Oil 5-in-1 Care Mask, L’Oréal Paris

As the name implies, the mask contains coconut oil, which is famous for its ability to positively affect the condition of dry, damaged hair. It is especially pleasing that this mask can be used before washing, after washing and as an indelible care: shine, softness, smoothness, long-lasting hydration and protection of the strands are provided!

Leave-in care

The hair is still frizzy and sticking out in different directions, nothing helps, and you no longer know what to do? Perhaps it’s time to get acquainted with the category of leave-in hair care products.

Cream, serum, spray – regardless of the format, the meaning of “non-rinsing” is, as a rule, to create a protective layer on the surface of the hair, a barrier that protects against the aggressive influence of the environment (including too dry or too humid air).

The technique for using these tools varies. Usually they are applied to damp hair with smoothing movements from top to bottom, stepping back from the roots to about the middle of the length. Some leave-in products (livins) are applied to already dried clean hair.

If the hair is thick, dry and also curly, you should try using leave-in care on wet rather than damp hair – then the product will be evenly distributed and cover each hair with a thin protective film, thereby preventing electrification and fluffiness.

As for the format of the product, the thinner the hair, the lighter the texture should be. Accordingly, thick, coarse hair will like it more if it is creamy. Those with curly hair can use a leave-in cream as a styling tool.

Botanic Therapy “Royal Jelly and Propolis” Revitalizing Cream-Oil, Garnier

This rich and at the same time light cream with royal jelly, honey and propolis (a source of proteins, structural elements of the hair) is useful for very damaged, dried strands and protects against thermal effects, for example, when blow-drying.

Fructis Triple Recovery 10-in-1 Complex Leave-In Cream, Garnier

The composition includes avocado, olive and coconut oils, castor oil, shea butter, nourishing lipids that protect, smooth, discipline hair, and prevent dehydration. The cream is suitable for very dry, hard and porous strands – in general, this is an excellent remedy for frizzy hair.

Express conditioner double elixir “Total recovery 5” Elseve, L’Oréal Paris

A light spray will help to cope with the electrification of the hair and make it so that it does not frizz during the day – the strands immediately become smooth and silky, retaining these properties, even if the hair is badly damaged.

Leave-in nourishing care with olive oil for dry hair Strengthening and Hydrating Hair Oil-in-Cream, Kiehl’s

This cream contains avocado and olive oils, which allows the product to fight dehydration of the hair and its consequences: dryness, dullness, brittleness, fluffiness.

Smoothing Leave-In Concentrate Smoothing Oil-Infused Leave-In Concentrate, Kiehl’s

Babassu & Argan Oil Concentrate will help pacify hair, smooth it, prevent frizz and “nail down” throughout the day if needed.

Oils

This sub-category of leave-in products will also help make hair less frizzy, as the vegetable and silicone oils commonly included in formulas seal in moisture while repelling water, protecting the hair from external aggressors. Oils can be applied along the entire length of the hair or on the ends, which are often fluffy and split.

Oil Elixir Fructis “Triple Recovery”, Garnier

Elixir oil with triglyceride and fruit oils coats the hair with a shiny protective mantle, leaving it smooth and silky.

Hair oil “Extraordinary” Elseve, L’Oréal Paris

Hair cosmetic oil, enriched with oils of six rare colors, perfectly copes with its duties, nourishing the strands from the inside and protecting them from the outside.

Here are eight tips on what to do at home if your hair is frizzy:

  1. at the end of shampooing, rinse the strands with cool water – this will help seal the cuticle;

  2. do not rub your hair with a towel after washing – this way you provoke damage and once again disturb the cuticle layer;

  3. do not go to bed with wet hair – tossing and turning in your sleep, you risk damaging the strands, which are very vulnerable when wet;

  4. if possible, try to dry your head naturally, and if you cannot do without a hair dryer, be sure to use protective equipment;

  5. advice from Garnier creator Yevgeny Sedoy: “To remove frizz during the day, you can simply wet your hands with water and run them through your hair: wet hands will remove static electricity and your hair will stop bristling.”

  6. for those with curly hair, to instantly combat the dandelion effect, moisten the strands abundantly, for example, with a spray or repeatedly running a wet hand over the curls until the curl takes its shape; it is better to fix the result with indelible care or styling cream;

  7. varnish perfectly fights fluffiness that has arisen against the background of hair porosity;

  8. “Give preference to cotton clothes, avoid woolen things. If this is not possible, carry a small package with a leave-in hair cream in your purse and use it as needed, ”advises Evgeny Sedoy.

How to remove frizzy hair in the salon

Most salon procedures are aimed either at hair restoration (this, of course, includes the fight against porosity and dryness), or at creating a protective layer. In any case, the hair stops fluffing – at least until the composition is washed off.

Lamination

During this procedure, the hair is covered with an artificial film that creates shine and also repels moisture and at the same time protects the hair from dehydration. This prevents fluffiness. True, the procedure should be done if the hair has already undergone a course of restoration, it is meaningless on “killed” hair. It also does not suit curly hair.

Screening

Like lamination, shielding works on the surface of the hair, only this time the protective shield is formed using amino acids, oils and silicones. The result is, but rather short-lived. Read.

Botox

In fact, this is a restorative procedure: the hair is saturated with keratin and amino acids. The surface of the hair becomes smoother, the cuticle closes tightly. True, for a sustainable result, you need a course.

Keratin care

A good treatment for damaged hair, aimed at saturating the strands with vegetable proteins that are embedded in the hair, giving the cuticle density and strength. Please note: keratin treatment cannot straighten hair (unlike keratin straightening), that is, it does not change its structure. Although they will become smoother due to saturation with proteins. This is written in detail here.

Is it possible to get rid of fluffy hair with homemade masks

Some girls prefer to take care of their hair with homemade products. And we understand them perfectly – you can fight fluffiness on your own with the help of masks, mostly oil ones, with various useful additives in the form of yogurt, eggs, honey.

Revitalizing oil mask

The good thing about this recipe is that it can be varied using absolutely any oil of your choice. But still, when it comes to damaged, dry hair, coconut, olive and avocado oils are considered the most effective.

Warm up 3 tbsp. spoons of a mixture based on oil in a water bath. Apply a warm composition to your hair, put on a cap and wrap your head with a towel. Leave for two hours. Wash off with warm water.

Vegetable oils can be used in pure form

  1. Before shampooing, apply olive oil to dry hair and leave for an hour, then wash your hair as usual – the hair will become softer and more manageable.

  2. Vegetable oil can be used instead of cosmetic or leave-in care. The main thing is that it should not be too heavy and leave no greasy effect. For these purposes, we choose light oils – avocado or jojoba. You can apply them both on wet hair (to seal moisture) and on dry hair (to protect against the aggressive influence of the environment).
