The number of new COVID-19 infections today amounted to 4226. The summer wave of infections is in full swing and it is difficult to assess how it will be affected by the beginning of the long weekend. The virus keeps mutating in an attempt to circumvent the immunity produced by vaccines. It can also come back a few days after the symptoms have disappeared, and doctors warn against the so-called COVID-19 rebound.

  1. The number of infections indicates that the summer pandemic wave is not reversing
  2. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for the third year, it still surprises us with its course. More and more is being said about the “COVID rebound” phenomenon, ie the return of symptoms after a few days

New phenomenon – COVID-19 recurrence. Symptoms may come back up to two days later

Although the COVID-19 pandemic has been going on for its third year, it still surprises us. More and more is being said about the phenomenon that can appear two to eight days after symptoms have disappeared or a negative test has been taken. It is about “COVID-19 rebound”, which Bartosz Fiałek, a physician and promoter of medical knowledge about this disease, explained in an interview with Medonet.

“COVID-19 rebound” can be defined as COVID-19 relapse, it can be “symptomatic” or “viral”. A symptomatic relapse is when two to eight days after the relapse has resolved, the symptoms reappear. A “viral” relapse is when a positive result appears again after a negative test for SARS-CoV-2 infection within two to eight years.

According to Dr. Bartosz Fiałek, the phenomenon has not yet been fully understood, so we cannot indicate an unequivocal cause. However, it is suspected that it is related to the fact that the organism did not fully cope with the pathogen. Such a COVID-19 relapse was experienced by Dr. Anthony Fauci, the US President’s medical adviser, and President Joe Biden himself.

The end of the holiday is approaching. What’s next for the COVID-19 pandemic?

Many questions about how the pandemic will unfold are giving rise to the approaching fall / winter infection season. – The most likely scenario is that if we are dealing with another wave of pandemic, it will rather be postponed to November or December – said Health Minister Adam Niedzielski during one of the press conferences.

He emphasized that the time perspective for the course of the pandemic has changed compared to last year. – This time the waveform that we are dealing with is softer than the experts predicted – he assessed. In his opinion, now the main tools to fight are vaccinations, new drugs and masks, which are recommended for risk groups.

Meanwhile, experts emphasize that the latest mutations of the virus are not the end.

«Let us not delude ourselves that the virus will end up with a mutation BA.5. Such thinking would be naïve »- said Dr. Aneta Afelt, a member of the COVID-19 advisory team at the President of the Polish Academy of Sciences, recently in an interview with Medonet.

WHO’s chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan shares a similar view: “We must be prepared for COVID-19 waves – each new variant will be more contagious – more infected will translate into more hospitalizations and illnesses.”
