The health department presented weekly covid statistics. In the last seven days, 24 thousand people have arrived. 918 COVID-19 patients. Up to 4070 are reinfections, i.e. re-infections with coronavirus. 109 patients died during this time due to the disease. These numbers are the highest since the beginning of the summer wave of infections. Compared to the previous week, the number of infections increased by 3 and deaths by 36.

Covid data – week to week comparison

Today’s data show a clear increase in the number of infections and deaths compared to previous health ministry reporting periods.

A week ago, there were also a lot of infections (on a weekly basis), but still less than today (21 thousand. 973). Similarly in July weeks: the last report of this month mentioned 19 thousand. 577 patients, and previously 12 thousand. 762. The biggest difference is, however, compared to the first half of July, when 7569 infections were recorded per week (data published on July 13), and earlier 4163. Comparing these numbers with today’s ones, it is almost a six-fold increase.

Let us recall that at the beginning of summer, the number of infections per week was at the level of 1-2 thousand.

Increases are also seen in the number of deaths. In the second half of June, a dozen or so of them were recorded weekly, today more are reported every day. For example, on June 22, the Ministry of Health reported that 19 people died (during the entire week) due to COVID-17, and a month later (July 27), there were already 49 patients. August started even worse – 73 deaths in seven days (data from August 3). This infamous record was “broken” yesterday, when the total number of deaths since the previous MZ report was 78.

According to today’s data, 19 people died last week due to COVID-109, which is 36 more than in the previous reporting period.

How is the government responding to the rise in coronavirus infections?

At the moment, we do not hear about any major changes in the government’s strategy to combat the coronavirus. However, there are announcements.

The most important thing is to widen the age group eligible for a second booster dose. From April, the fourth dose can be vaccinated by seniors 80+, and from the end of July also people 60+ and 12+ with impaired immunity. The remaining age groups of adults, ie 18+, will most likely be “unlocked” in September. The exact date, however, is unknown.

According to the information released yesterday in Polsat News, Deputy Minister Waldemar Kraska, the Ministry of Health is already after discussions on the preparation of the health care system for the next wave of infections.

– We have a plan prepared for the fall, as we have always done. Well in advance. We assume several variants – he said, adding that «an increase in the number of new infections is inevitable in the autumn ». — Now the only question is whether it will be the beginning of October or it will be in the long term. But there will certainly be a greater number – he assured.

The deputy head of the Ministry of Health also referred to the question about the return of the obligation to face masks. Germany has recently made such a “move”, where this type of protection against infection is expected to return soon due to the increase in the number of infections.

— The obligation to wear face masks will almost certainly return in connection with the next wave of coronavirus – It is very possible that the obligation to cover the mouth and nose will be imposed on people from the sensitive group, i.e. over 60 – he added.
